Thank you @_UCSA for this award! It is an honor to be recognized as the Basic Needs Legislator of the year. I will continue to fight to address the basic needs crisis facing thousands of students across our college campuses. Thank you, UCSA, for this award! This year, I introduced SB 961, the CalFresh for Students Act, which will streamline the process for college students to enroll and register for food benefits.

Libraries are the heart of our neighborhoods, and today in Colonial Heights was a powerful reminder of why they matter so much. Team Ashby was proud to attend the Reopening of the Community Meeting Room at the Colonial Heights Library following the fire that forced the library to close. Libraries are more than buildings. They are places where neighbors gather, where students find inspiration, and where a lifelong love of reading and learning begins. Thank you to @EricZGuerra, @CaityMapleD5, the Colonial Heights Neighborhood Association, and the Friends of the Colonial Heights Library for their leadership and dedication in restoring this important community space. Spaces like this strengthen our neighborhoods and help foster literacy, curiosity, and connection for the next generation. Warning ⚠️ this is ANOTHER boastful post about an incredible member of our team. Two in one day (I know)…. But hey what can I say they work really hard and I’m super proud of them. Ryan Tomlinson has been promoted to Policy Analyst. This young man never stops smiling, has an amazing work ethic, delivers results and is an absolute joy to be around. In his new role he will be the right hand man to our Legislative Director Lesley Brizuela. They will lead our efforts to drive meaningful, thoughtful bills through the legislative process. Please join me in congratulating Ryan on his big promotion.

Warning ⚠️ this is a boastful post about an amazing member of our team!! Please join me in congratulating Bhawan Cheema on her promotion to Senate Floor Consultant. I know the titles don’t explain much - but as Majority Leader I get to select a team member to help me run the Senate floor (agendas, floor sessions and schedules). It was an easy choice. Bhawan has been with me since my days at City Hall. She is a utility player. She can do everything from start up a new community Farmers Market to planning the best way to move forward a complicated package of legislation. I know she will serve the State of California with the same level of excellence and integrity I have grown accustomed to seeing from her for many years. We are fortunate to have her on the team and California is blessed to have her dedication and intellect helping to advance the work of the State Senate. We are both extremely grateful for the opportunity to serve. Please help me congratulate Bhawan on her big promotion.

Meanwhile… in some of the areas of our beautiful city students who couldn’t get downtown gathered near their high schools to add their voices in solidarity to other young people across the state and nation. 400 students from Natomas schools met up on a busy corner in their neighborhood to defiantly stand up for their friends, family and neighbors. The young people are leading.
