Deeply saddened by the passing of Lord Meghnad Desai - a towering economist, prolific author, and fearless public intellectual. From the lecture halls of the LSE to the benches of the House of Lords, his scholarship spanned Marxian economics, globalisation, human development, and India-UK relations. Through over 20 books - from Marx’s Revenge and The Rediscovery of India to The Poverty of Political Economy - he challenged orthodoxies and inspired generations. His intellectual rigour was matched by wit, warmth, and a belief in open debate. Together with his brilliant partner Kishwar Desai, he built institutions and ideas that will endure. We have lost a mind that straddled continents and disciplines with ease. I had just met both of them two months ago at the screening of Kesari 2 - who could have imagined he would leave us so soon. My heartfelt condolences to Kishwar and the family. Om Shanti.

Deeply saddened by the demise of economist, thinker, the first Indian Peer in the Labour Party and member of the UK's House of Lords, Lord Meghnad Desai Ji. I first met Lord Desai in 1999 when I was posted as India’s Deputy High Commissioner at @HCI_London and he led LSE's Centre for the Study of Global Governance which was also founded by him in 1992. He taught at the London School of Economics for nearly four decades, shaping economic research and inspiring generations of students in addition to authoring several pathbreaking books and more than 200 articles in academic journals. He leaves behind a rich body of work, a lasting legacy and very big shoes to fill. Lakshmi and I offer our sincerest condolences to Kishwar Ji.
