if you watched that era - you'd understand that the refs essentially rigged every game. real madrid played physically, but barcelona sold every foul like they got killed, mobbed the ref to put pressure, dove constantly to kill the game, fouled/tactical fouls WITH IMPUNITY. every game was a red card/pen vs real. it killed the spirit of competitiveness. then things stopped around 2014, and it became funner/more balanced.

Messi scored well-executed goals vs Real Madrid, but the reality to those that observed is this was a cagey match where Madrid had the advantage and would have likely progressed. Mourinho's tactic was specifically to plug the "hole" between defense and midfield with Pepe to neutralize Messi's influence - which had tremendous success. Of course, Barcelona players were given specific instructions to try to get Pepe sent off - and Dani Alves - benefitting from suspect refereeing did just that. This collapsed Madrid's tactics completely, and opened the gate to Messi's goals. Under fair conditions, they would not have happened.
