UPDATE ON SURPLUS: First, if you're new here, we're building surplusintelligence.ai. We're an inference provider based on an open market. For high volume buyers, the market prices have been better than the prices you can get anywhere else. Our median discounts have been 40-60% vs other major inference providers. At a 50% discount, it means 2x as much inference for the same amount of spend. If you're building an AI product, you should definitely check us out! ---- I'm also building in the open. And this inspired someone to create a coin, $surplus. The creator is unknown but they gave the trading fees to my twitter account. I used some of the fees to get a few months of runway for a team. ---- Some major work completed by the team last month: 1. Migration to AWS (was completed faster than expected, props to the team). 2. Stripe payment support. Soon after adding this, we saw both; (1) some incremental payment volume, and (2) a shift from crypto to Stripe even though most current users are crypto natives and even though Stripe's fees are high -- both validate the decision to prioritize fiat support. 3. UI revamp. Site looks totally different now; no longer the basic template I made with Claude lol. ---- A few next priorities: 1. Major rework of the orderbook / routing / offer health logic. This is a large chunk of work but will address a lot of feedback we've gotten from both buyers and sellers. 2. Adding support for multi-tenant accounts and more features for business users. This prepares us to onboard business users. 3. Improvements to our media model offerings (image, video, ...). 4. Growth: cold outreach, seo, tech influencer marketing, ... . ---- Revenue: We still have 0% fees. We have roughly $1000-2000 of daily payment volume now, so if we turned on fees up to 5% we'd expect up to $50-100/day in revenue. We've made 69.82 ETH from all time trading fees, all of which is being swapped to USDC that is used for paying the team and other business costs (AWS credits, ...). We're continuing to explore options for increasing runway. We are taking our time on this to be sure we land on something fair to the token community and durable for us as a business that wants to grow rapidly. We aren't planning to sell $Surplus for more runway. ---- We also love feedback from our users, and we shape our priorities around what we hear from you. The combined economics of Venice and Surplus are so interesting. @AskVenice has a token, $DIEM, which gives $1/day of Venice API credits. gray line = total yield = 365 / $DIEM price. On surplusintelligence.ai, $DIEM holders can resell those credits (i.e. sell their yield to inference buyers). Sellers choose the discount that they offer to buyers. Higher discounts mean more of the yield goes to inference buyers, and lower discounts mean more of the yield meterializes for inference sellers ($DIEM holders). red = buyer yield = discount * total yield blue = seller yield = (1-discount) * total yield When I was bootstrapping the marketplace by selling my $DIEM yield at steep discounts in April and early May, practically all the yield was manifesting as nearly free inference for buyers on surplus. Now that demand has been growing faster than supply, sellers are getting a yield of around 15% (just over half of DIEM's full 30% yield). Inference buyers are still benefiting a lot, since the othe rest of the yield is manifesting as a subsidy for their inference costs.
