This Saturday there is an election for Chairman of the Virginia Beach Republican Party. Any registered Virginia Beach voter can participate. It runs from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Princess Anne High School.
I’m supporting Lance Lesher.
I don’t dislike Laura Hughes—far from it. But some of the people in her orbit have gone out of their way to be nasty. It’s one thing to disagree. It’s another to publicly attack people simply for supporting someone else—especially someone like Lance, a retired Captain whose character is not in question.
What I can’t stand about our party is this: there’s always a faction that demands 100% loyalty. If you agree with them 80–90% of the time, that’s not good enough—you’re labeled a RINO and treated like the enemy. The worst attacks I’ve taken in my political life haven’t come from Democrats. They’ve come from Republicans.
At least when Democrats attack you, they call you a name and move on. When it comes from your own side, it’s personal. It lingers. It turns into grudges, backroom undermining, and an effort to tear you down completely—all because you didn’t fall in line.
Watch the comments on posts about this race. You’ll see exactly what I mean. Republicans attacking Republicans harder than they ever go after Democrats.
And then we wonder why Democrats keep winning.
It’s not complicated. A party that would rather tear itself apart than work with people they agree with 85% of the time is going to lose.
