White Europeans—Irish, Slavs, Britons, Scandinavians, and many others—were among the most heavily trafficked groups in certain eras. The word “slave” itself comes from “Slav,” a reminder of how frequently Eastern Europeans were captured and sold. The transatlantic slave trade was uniquely brutal in its scale, racial justification, and hereditary nature, and its legacy continues to shape inequalities today. That suffering matters deeply and should never be dismissed. But it is historically inaccurate and unfair to treat slavery as a crime committed only by white people against Black people. Every major civilization has blood on its hands. Africans sold other Africans into the trade. Arabs, Ottomans, Mongols, and others enslaved millions across continents. Europeans were both perpetrators and victims in different times and places.
