My #PrinceAndrew story is this. A few years ago I was at Ascot races. It was a classic King George, Crystal Ocean only just lost out to Enable. As a racing journalist I asked the owner of the former, Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, for a comment or two. He was saying how proud he was of his horse when there was a loud shout. ‘Evelyn, Evelyn!’. It was the (then) Duke of York. He came bounding over - ignored me completely and the fact that I had been talking to Sir E and the two just went off together without any acknowledgment - as if I wasn’t there. I was made to feel invisible. My first (&) only impression of Andrew therefore was his lack of manners. A ‘Hello’ and ‘Excuse me/us’ would have sufficed.
