1892 photograph of Victorian artist Henry Tanworth Wells in his studio, part of a series by Henry Peach Robinson. It was taken in Thorpe Lodge east of Holland Park, which we finished the restoration of in 2022.

Two rows of white-painted sliding screens line the glazed sides of the space and a bespoke mechanism, inspired by a sash window, enables the artist to vary the scale of their art - a single canvas could be up to 8 x 5m - thereby their imagination is not constrained by the space
The form of the extension was derived from the art department’s need for painting surfaces which would cater to multiple classes and allow students to work at a range of scales.

The brief for the new extension was to be adaptable for the different users: be it an art studio or a community room.
