The growing tribalization of discourse heralds the death of the Progressive political project. Progressives have totally given up on the idea that there's any sort of debate or argument to be had. They've even given up on the idea that everyone in society can be indoctrinated into becoming liberals just like them. They're now circling the wagons and vowing to defend their own tribe's interests...which is fine in a way, that's still politics. But it's no longer the missionary style of politics that defined elements of the Great Awokening. They're slowly coming around to the realization that enormous chunks of society will never consent to being ruled by them. That won't stop them from seeking to rule anyway or impose their will by force, but it does strip away the almost mythic quality that Progressivism enjoyed about the "long arc of history". Politics is now just about power, in-group preference, and rewarding your friends while punishing your enemies. Progressives can still win on that and rule Blue States with an iron fist for years or decades to come, but the ideology itself is dying from within. If you've given up on the central premise, the animating spirit that drove Progressivism forward will be incapable of renewing itself over time and eventually wither and die. Woke 2.0 is going to be a far more hardened, sectarian, and quite frankly nastier form of politics than Woke 1.0, as impossible as that may sound.
