International relations have sunk to street gangs discourse

A walk in the streets that connect Ras Beirut to Hamra has become a sad journey down memory lane. As a life long resident of this area it’s disheartening to see this transformation. Once-upon-a time these quiet residential areas were clean and tidy with nice shops and a few book shops and maybe a tailor shop. Now, the streets are dirty. Sidewalks blocked with motorcycles. Endless rows of random shops that take over the sidewalks. Throngs of young men sitting on the sidewalks smoking endlessly. The heart of Beirut is on the brink of becoming a slum while its aging residents watch helplessly & the Lebanese cling to nostalgic visions about a place that no longer exists. Beirut, Lebanon.

إطلعت اليوم على راجمات من التغريدات المضادة بين جمهور التيار الوطني الحر وجمهور القوات اللبنانية إثر مناظرة تلفزيونية بين وزيرين سابقين. وما قرأت لم يكن منافسة سياسية، بل انتحار جماعي بطيء. مسرحية هزيلة، بائسة، فيها الكرامات تُهدر والوطن يُنسى. انظروا من حولكم: فرنسا المشتعلة نهضت حين قال ديغول: "الجمهورية لا يمكن أن تكون غنيمة للأحزاب". تمّت المصالحة في جنوب إفريقيا عندما اختار مانديلا الصفح بدل الانتقام. أما أنتم، فما زلتم تعتمدون سياسة الكيديات والنكايات لا بل تتقاتلون على من يملك هذا الوزير أو ذاك، وكأن الوزارات ملكية خاصة تُورَّث. استفيقوا. الوزير ليس منكم، ولا لكم. الوزير موظّف في خدمة الناس، لا في خدمة طائفته أو حزبه. لبنان لا ينهار نظرياً، بل عملياً، حرفياً. واللبنانيون غارقون في صغائرهم. لبنان يقف على حافة المجهول، واللبنانيون يتراشقون بالشتائم وكأنّهم في زواريب الأحياء، يشعلون فيه النار وهم يبتسمون … هل هكذا نريد أن يذكرنا التاريخ؟ الخطر داهم، والوقت لا يرحم. ومن لا يرتقي إلى مستوى الوطن، سيسقط معه. بكل محبة. #لبنان
