The Story Behind The Story I started writing Walter and the Secret Keeper twelve years ago, though the story itself reaches much farther back. When I was a boy, the world around me felt enchanted. Maps led to buried treasure. Fairies tucked silver dollars into rock walls and hung them from lilac branches. And at the center of it all was Santa Claus—always just out of sight, always one step ahead of my spying eyes. As I grew older, Santa’s secret schemes only became more elaborate. Eventually, of course, I realized it was my father. But he never admitted a thing. Even when my siblings and I were well into our twenties, Santa still managed to come and go without being detected. I never knew if I would publish Walter and the Secret Keeper. But when my father passed away on Christmas Day 2025—never having read my book—I took it as a sign.
