Living with Autism day to day. If we give up; our children will give up. We fight for them so they fight to get better; to be able to function independently.

Children and adults with Autism are very innocent. They think literally; some don’t understand abstract nuances of everyday life. Patience is needed to explain verbally, or visually (in writing) to help them understand.

The turnover with providers are so high. BCBAs, RBTs, Tutors, Skills Trainers. It would be nice if these ones would stay and grow and evolve with our child

Most ABA service providers through Insurance only work with children and adolescents up to age 21. Many children with Autism will grow into adults and they still need services.

#Autism, #AutismAwarenessMonth Support workers for children and adults with Autism are just as important as fast-food, restaurant workers. They can help keep our kids employed, they shield our kids from being bullied.

#autism To all employers, please work with adults with autism, give them a chance. Allow them time to acclimate to the job setting. Some adults with autism want to work, and can work, but need employers that will work with their families, and providers!

Children and adults with Autism brighten the world with their unique take on the world. They are honest, they know how to love, they are loyal. This is why we love them. It is our wish that employers and the communities they live in feel the same.

Some adults w/Autism face dangerous challenges. Some want their independence, to do what they want, yet they lack the executive functioning to plan and make the right decisions They need constant supervision. It can be exhausting for some parents.

Parents with children and adults with Autism are working tirelessly daily. First, we work to pay our bills, second, we advocate for our child, third, we implement our child’s program in the natural environment so that we can help our child. We work 24/7

No vocational services for adults with Autism? DVR and DOH excuse is there are no providers. Therefore we must wait? We cannot afford to wait. Some parents take matters into our own hands. We start a business!

#Autism #autistic Hats off to step moms and dads who have big hearts for us and our child with Autism. We know it’s not easy, yet, they chose to be with us and learn and endure the challenges that come with Autism. We truly appreciate them

Mothers of children and adults with Autism are true warriors. They advocate, they learn behavior strategies, they are willing to endure a lot from DOE, DOH, DVR, and their employer. Sometimes it is overwhelming, exhausting. They do it, because they believe in their child

#autism DVR's order of selection is based on the severity of the disability=Less time on the waitlist. Yet, they must be job ready in order to be eligible for services. It's a formality to push them through and out. A false hope

Some doctors, social workers even some BCBAs who work adults with Autism (not all) need to understand that they need direct instruction and to use behavioral strategies when teaching them. Otherwise, they learn very little by sitting and only listening

#Autism There are no laws that mandate services for adults with Autism. Some parents must deal with providers that don't call back when trying to apply for Adult Day programs. Months can go by. Don't wait until the last minute. Apply early. Persistence is needed

#Autism #autistic #AutismAwareness DOE, DOH, DVR, they all specialise in delays, deferring, not responding or even not following up. This teaches parents to persist in being relentless in advocating for our child. We don’t give up!

#Autism #Intellectualdisability Some children and adults with Autism have a secondary diagnosis of intellectual disability. It hurts us when neural-typical people use the “M” or “R” word in front of us to express stupidity. Pls stop and use another word! It’s offensive!

#Autism Some w/Autism use behavior to communicate. Taking ABC data is important to identify the functions of their behavior so that right interventions and strategies can put in place. It doesn’t mean teachers or providers are not doing their job.

Some doctors need to understand that parents with adults with Autism (some not all) still need to bring them to our appointments, because they need to be supervised. We cannot ask them to leave for privacy purposes. Only option is to reschedule.

Children and adults with Autism have innocence that is refreshing and is needed during chaos and troubled times. They remind us of the simple joys us neural typical folks take for granted. They put their own spin on things that keeps us chuckling
