@TomPlender If excitation outweighs inhibition,
the brain becomes more certain… and less flexible.
Harder to update - and harder to shift.
English

@TomPlender As arousal increases (which changes how strongly the brain weights its predictions)
↑ noradrenaline
↑ glutamate
↓ GABA tone
the system shifts toward excitation

If you're interested in modern theories of #FND functional neurological disorder- this looks like a great paper- emphasis on viewing FND through a predictive coding framework

@purposeful_pd I’m not afraid of exercise, but my system can still react to it as a stressor - activating the same physiological response.
English

@purposeful_pd I think the article is moving toward a brain network model.
I agree with your point about fear
It’s interesting though - I think the word itself can put people off. It’s often taken as something conscious, which it can be, but the underlying threat response can also be automatic

Science is shedding new light on a disorder medicine once forgot.
For a long time, conditions like FND were dismissed.
That’s changing.
This Harvard article explains why:

Put simply, the brain looks less “overworked” in nature.

@SarahLidstone @HaseelBhattPT @IntegratedMove @KITE_UHN @UHNSHSNeurology @FNDSociety Now, from the perspective of a Parkinson patient may I suggest something radical? Unfortunately, all the experts will never get in the same room. The reality of something like FND is so much messier. There’s nobody to treat the whole. We need a whole new profession in healthcare.

@purposeful_pd Yeah, me too -
as a kid, I chewed on everything. Cuffs in particular were always chewed to bits.
In autism it’s often linked to sensory processing + stimming - a way of regulating the system.

Temperature sensitivity is commonly reported in #MECFS and #fibromyalgia.
Much of it points toward abnormalities in the autonomic #nervoussystem, which helps regulate temperature, circulation, and other core functions.

Interesting research suggesting undigested fructose may contribute to #inflammation & #anxiety through the gut–brain axis.
Another example of how diet, the #microbiome, immune signalling and the #nervoussystem are deeply interconnected.

The absence of biomarkers does not invalidate the physiological reality of symptoms after #exertion.
Many processes in the brain and #nervoussystem remain difficult to capture with current tests. Symptoms themselves are evidence that something physiological is happening.
