During a press conference at the #SaturnAwards, James Cameron spoke about the prospect of #Avatar 4, revealing that he was fairly certain the film would be made: "Absolutely. To perfectly be clear, we haven't even made a decision to move forward. We're going to have to decide, as a society, when the use of AI is inappropriate. Let me give an example of a field that has already decided this, decades ago. Tractor pulling is a midwestern sport where people compete to build the tractor with the greatest pulling power, and then use it to pull against an ever-increasing drag.  Whoever gets furthest wins.  There are no restrictions on the types of engine or tractor, aside from overall weight.  So it's basically a contest in who can buy the biggest engine?  No, because the rules require that it be piloted by hand.  No gyroscopes, electronics, or mechanical steering.  That keeps the sport human and engaging.   The automatic guidance required for superhuman tractor pull driving is pretty simple (I looked into it in about 1991 when I was going to tractor pulls).  You could build it out of 1950's missile guidance technology.  By 1991, it would have been well within my one-person engineering capabilities. And by 2026, It's trivial. But to even get close to it is illegal.  So here's a sport that decided to rule out AI decades ago, because it was decades ago when AI began to impinge on its sorrow, glory and beauty.  (Sorry if I've said anything less than fully true about tractor pulling. It's been 30 years since I've been to a pull.)

My dad (Richard Feynman) had a side hustle doing industrial consulting. He'd spend a few hours visiting a company, talking to the engineers, looking at stuff, and then maybe have a good suggestion. Sometimes he would bring his son along. I only recall one of his suggestions, but it made the company he was consulting for way better off, so I guess his exorbitant consulting fees were worth it. We could have been wealthier if he had done it systematically, but he didn't want to be organized about looking for jobs, so it just happened when someone asked.
