Here it is: my investigation for @VICE into the retirement of Bassnectar. It took six months, hundreds of hours and countless sleepless nights. I feel so honored that so many women and collaborators trusted me with their stories. vice.com/en/article/4ad…

I was moved to tears reading stories in our inbox from people who recently learned they're autistic and were profoundly emotionally healed by the diagnosis. I hope I did a small part in affirming and encouraging people who are on a similar journey. the1a.org/segments/what-…

Richard Powers is a ridiculously smart, thoughtful writer and genuinely kind guy. I'm obsessed with reading his books. What a privilege to craft the conversation that millions hear about his latest work. the1a.org/segments/autho…

Because Brooks worked in Alabama, one of about half of states where 8 million state and local employees have no OSHA protections, there were no public official investigation about the event afterwards and no fines.

Josh Brooks was working construction for Huntsville, Ala. when the trench he was in caved in, trapping him and his colleagues. He suffered injuries, but his friend Bobby Green died by his side. "I just felt his presence leave,” he told me. “There was just a cold stillness.”

Trench collapses happen when workers are in ditches and the walls cave in, trapping them. Despite required safety measures like trench boxes, more than 250 Americans died in the last decade from the preventable incidents. My latest investigation: npr.org/2024/07/20/g-s…

VERY FIRST story featured in @1a new episode on Ask A Librarian is story of woman who said her daughter's life was saved by a librarian who helped her understand her medical oncology: "It takes a village, and that village includes a librarian" the1a.org/segments/ask-a… @AveryJCK

VICE took a chance on a pitch that nearly everywhere else considered but declined. In the midst of his attempted comeback, that #MeToo story on Bassnectar needs to remain accessible. It is for now, but idk how much longer. vice.com/en/article/4ad…

Two of the most important homes of my print journalism, VICE and DCist, saw their end last week. Both gave me the chance to do surprising, challenging work. I feel for the reporters (incl. me!) who are still trying to tell meaningful stories, w fewer places to pay them to do so.

Listener input on today's @1a was so powerful. It's apparent listeners get what's at stake. A DC resident said: "I am deeply worried that without local news, people will be encouraged to get information from influencers instead of journalists who are trained to do this work."

A @1a listener pointed out how WAMU abruptly shuttering DCist is similar to what a private corp did in 2018, when WAMU stepped in to save DCist, knowing how crucial it is to our community. This 1A convo's the only place you'll hear details abt the layoffs on our air this morning.

Must-listen today on @1a: The slow death of local news coverage, something the D.C. region has absolutely experienced in recent months, with the Post trimming the Metro section and @wamu885 killing @dcist and laying off 15 people. the1a.org/segments/local…

@1a small fact check: DCist was originally shut down in 2017, WAMU relaunched it in 2018.

Listeners waking up this morning won’t hear the voices of our colleagues that @wamu885 management unceremoniously laid off on Friday. Readers won’t get to click over to @DCist and see their work — or anyone’s work, since the site has been taken away from our community. 🧵

WAMU management and @AmericanU, which owns our license, has let us and you — our listeners, readers, and members — down. They have failed to steward the service we all rely on. We know the journalism industry is struggling, but poor leadership has led us to this moment.

This morning, @wamu885 management informed us they are laying off 15 vital people from our organization. These individuals are the lifeblood of our journalism. Our hearts are broken. We can’t believe we are losing our colleagues and friends.

For no reason at all, I'm starting a thread of all the DCist/WAMU stories that have stuck with you and helped you make sense of the city. I'll start. Read @amanduhgomez on why some Black business owners on H St. NE say they're facing discrimination (dcist.com/story/23/09/11…)

When my investigation came out in VICE, Minnesota was one of the very few prominent DJs to not obscurely allude to the allegations against Bassnectar - but actually refer to them directly, share the reporting, and denounce predatory behavior in the bass music scene.

@candidaj hello! I'm a journalist researching family separation, inspired by my grandma's journey on the Kindertransport. I'm visiting London tomorrow and interested to speak with Lord Dubs, if he has any availability over the coming days! My email is averyjessa@gmail.com. thanks
