Because Brooks worked in Alabama, one of about half of states where 8 million state and local employees have no OSHA protections, there were no public official investigation about the event afterwards and no fines.

Josh Brooks was working construction for Huntsville, Ala. when the trench he was in caved in, trapping him and his colleagues. He suffered injuries, but his friend Bobby Green died by his side. "I just felt his presence leave,” he told me. “There was just a cold stillness.”

Trench collapses happen when workers are in ditches and the walls cave in, trapping them. Despite required safety measures like trench boxes, more than 250 Americans died in the last decade from the preventable incidents. My latest investigation: npr.org/2024/07/20/g-s…

Two of the most important homes of my print journalism, VICE and DCist, saw their end last week. Both gave me the chance to do surprising, challenging work. I feel for the reporters (incl. me!) who are still trying to tell meaningful stories, w fewer places to pay them to do so.

Listener input on today's @1a was so powerful. It's apparent listeners get what's at stake. A DC resident said: "I am deeply worried that without local news, people will be encouraged to get information from influencers instead of journalists who are trained to do this work."

A @1a listener pointed out how WAMU abruptly shuttering DCist is similar to what a private corp did in 2018, when WAMU stepped in to save DCist, knowing how crucial it is to our community. This 1A convo's the only place you'll hear details abt the layoffs on our air this morning.

@1a small fact check: DCist was originally shut down in 2017, WAMU relaunched it in 2018.

When my investigation came out in VICE, Minnesota was one of the very few prominent DJs to not obscurely allude to the allegations against Bassnectar - but actually refer to them directly, share the reporting, and denounce predatory behavior in the bass music scene.
