After more than three years with #UNHCR, where I worked in communication across Africa, my time there has come to an end as the humanitarian sector faces severe funding cuts.
This work changed how I see communication. It is more than messaging. It is about what gets shown, what gets simplified, and what is left out entirely.
This work is also personal. I experienced displacement at a young age, and it continues to shape my commitment to ensuring #refugees are at the centre of humanitarian storytelling.
I am now returning to the independent media space, focusing on #ethical storytelling and regional analysis around forced displacement and migration.

Today marked the official launch of the @GoleKaab website—a civic platform connecting citizens and civil society to strengthen public awareness and participation in parliamentary proceedings of the Federal Parliament of #Somalia. The launch was officially opened by MP Adar Ali, Member of the House of the People @Golaha_shac_JFS and Secretary of the Human Rights, Women, and Humanitarian Affairs Committee. She underscored @GoleKaab’s role in advancing legislative transparency, accountability, civil society oversight, and called for its expansion across all Federal Member States. The Chairperson of Somali Civil Society platform @SONSA_NSA @Osman_Moallim, shared the project’s journey, noting that @GoleKaab is a Somali civil society–led initiative that achieved tangible results during its pilot year. The Country Director of @NIMDSomalia, Abdijalil Tahir, delivered a remark of the .#GoleKaab launch and welcomed the suggestion from disability rights advocate Avv. Abdifatah to ensure full accessibility, including for persons with hearing and visual impairments, so that all communities can easily access legislative information and parliamentary accountability. He committed to implementing these recommendations to make #GoleKaab an inclusive platform for all. In closing, Mohamed Hussein Enow first director @SONSA_NSA and Senator Naima Ibrahim jointly recommended transitioning @GoleKaab beyond the pilot phase and scaling it nationwide. “Watching the Watchdogs” is here. Yesterday afternoon, the @GoleKaab website was officially launched a Somali civil society–led platform under @SONSA_NSA connecting citizens with the Federal Parliament of Somalia @Golaha_shac_JFS .
As highlighted in our previous post, @GoleKaab strengthens transparency, accountability, and public participation by improving access to legislative information, committees and supporting oversight of parliamentary proceedings.
This short video provides an overview of about the @GoleKaab, and its commitment to “Watching the Watchdogs” ensuring that citizens’ voices are heard and democratic governance is reinforced.

Our beautiful country, Somalia, holds a geopolitical position that is exceptionally rare in the world. Today, we once again bear witness to the true value of this position through the space project we are undertaking in cooperation with our Turkish brothers. This project is being constructed in Somalia for clear and fundamental reasons. Our land is situated close to the equator, where the Earth’s rotational speed is at its peak, enabling access to space with significantly greater efficiency and reduced cost. At the same time, Somalia opens eastward onto vast open seas, providing a clear, secure, and unobstructed launch corridor, far removed from dense populations and congested airspace. The convergence of these advantages exists in only a handful of places on Earth. It exists in Somalia. For this reason, this space project is not a matter of coincidence. It is the natural consequence of Somalia’s geography, strategic foresight, and enduring geopolitical significance.
