Top Sports Moments from the 2024-2025 School Year:  52 in a row: Axtell, under head coach Eric Detweiler, remained perfect for the fourth consecutive season as they win 50-0 over Victoria for the 8M-II state title by point rule with 2:01 remaining in the 4Q. The 52 wins is a state record of most consecutive wins by an 8-man team in Kansas history. Axtell only played one full game this season that they didn't win by point rule. Head Coach Eric Detweiler earned SIK 8M-II Coach of the Year for the third time. Seniors Brandon Schmelzle and Eli Broxterman round off incredible high school careers as they have both won SIK honors as both Offensive and Defensive player of the year. Schmelzle is heading to Kansas University to continue his football career while Broxterman is heading to Baker. #sportsinkansas

Back to Back 1,000 career point games, Axtell Cousins Continue to Dominate: After going 52-0 in football, winning four straight 8M-II state titles and never losing a single football game (youth, junior high or high school) for 12 years. These two keep adding to their accolades. Brandon Schmelzle (left) eclipsed 1,000 career points tonight in basketball for the Eagles. The game before this, his cousin Eli Broxterman (right) eclipsed 1,000 points. The two are first cousins and each have two Sports in Kansas football player of the year honors to their name. Schmelzle, a KU football signee, won the offensive player of the year in 8M-II as a senior while taking the defensive award as a junior. Broxterman won the offensive player of the year as a junior in 8M-II while winning the defensive player of the year as a senior. #sportsinkansas

The senior KU signee will go down as one of the best two-way players in 8-man history as he accounted for 180 career touchdowns as a four year starter and went 52-0, a new state record for wins consecutive in 8-man football in Kansas. 2024 Sports in Kansas 8M-II Defensive Player of the Year Eli Broxterman, Axtell Sr. LB/ATH Broxterman finishes one of the best two way careers in Kansas 8-man history as he goes 52-0 as a player with four state titles, a state record for consecutive wins in 8-man under head coach Eric Detweiler. He had 282 career tackles and nine career INTs with the majority of the games ending by point rule. He was part of 20 shutouts in high school as a four year starter. Last year he earned offensive player of the year honors but this year earned defense while his first cousin Brandon Schmelzle earned OPOY. Not only a standout on defense, he had 1,814 career rushing yards & 2,142 career receiving yards with 78 total career TDs.
