The State Migration Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the International Organization for Migration, with the support of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations and the co-sponsorship of UN-Habitat, organized a high-level side event entitled “Safe, Inclusive and Sustainable Cities in the Age of Migration – Towards WUF13” on 6 May 2026, in the margins of the second International Migration Review Forum. The event aimed to highlight governance frameworks that strengthen migrant integration and urban resilience, link national migration policies with local realities, and identify ways to advance the objectives of the Global Compact for Migration, in particular Objectives 15, 16, 18 and 23. It explored how cities can serve as engines of inclusion and resilience by integrating migration into urban planning, housing strategies and service delivery, while also contributing to discussions in preparation for the 13th session of the World Urban Forum, to be held from 17 to 22 May 2026. H.E. Mr. Vusal Huseynov, Chief of the State Migration Service of the Republic of Azerbaijan, delivered opening remarks alongside Mr. Arthur Erken, Regional Director of the International Organization for Migration, and Ms. Toni-Shae Freckleton, Director of the UN-Habitat New York Liaison Office. Moderated by Amb. Tofig Musayev, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, the panel segment featured presentations by Ms. Jennifer MacIntyre, Assistant Deputy Minister for International Affairs at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada; Mr. Md Mokhtar Ahmed, Secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh; Ms. Beatriz Ponce de León, Deputy Mayor for Immigrant, Migrant and Refugee Rights of the City of Chicago; Mr. Remy Sietchiping, Deputy Director of the UN-Habitat New York Liaison Office; Dr. Lucy Earle, Director of Research and Strategic Impact at the International Institute for Environment and Development; and Mr. Albert Lladó Romero, Head of Policy at United Cities and Local Governments. The panel was followed by an engaging discussion with the participation of representatives from Member States, international organizations, academia and civil society attending the second International Migration Review Forum.

Today, I have received a phone call from President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. During the call, satisfaction was expressed with the positive dynamics in the development of relations between our countries. We also exchanged views on the implementation of issues discussed during the meeting held in Gabala, within the framework of the bilateral agenda.
