The answer is to prove the fact without surrendering the data, using zero-knowledge proofs and other privacy-preserving technologies. The technology to do this exists today, built in Britain. Privacy is not an obstacle to digital identity. It is a requirement.

Scrapping the scheme is a promising sign for Britain. But the problem it was meant to solve remains. Right to work checks are still mandatory. Age verification is already law. And every check today means handing your documents to a server that will eventually be breached.

The UK's current poll / pettion system is laughable. You must enter your name, email, postcode and who knows what else is tracked. Polling infrastructure should not collect data about voters, it must stay private. Polls should be verifiable and include a check that each vote is actually from a UK person.
