I don't disagree, but I find a lot of those ppl engage with anime in a very shallow way. They only seem interested when it resembles Western prestige TV instead of appreciating anime on its own terms. Feels more like insecurity than genuine appreciation of the medium...

Hellsing, Black Lagoon, Bebop, etc, these are all "Prestige" type anime that are "okay to like cause people won't really make fun of you for it". Ironically it actually does go back to Mobile Suit Gundam which we could consider perhaps the 4th "Prestige Anime".
