Our researcher Cátia Pereira was awarded a Best Poster Prize in the @Microbiotec23 congress with the work "Harnessing the quest for eco-friendly alternatives to chemical surfactants by exploring extreme salinity environments". @SPBiotecnologia spmicrobiologia.wordpress.com/contatos/

@B3iS_Project members participated in the Science Communication Contest (3rd edition) promoted by @SPMicrobiologia and were awarded the first place on the “General Category”. Well done team! Our PhD student Joana Gomes presented her work under the B3iS project at the Bioinformatics Open Days 2023. BODs promote knowledge exchange among students, teachers, and researchers in the Bioinformatics. Joana presented our data on a microorganism isolated at Salinas de Aveiro.

Our posdoc researcher Cátia Pereira was awarded a FEBS grant for the Young Scientist Forum (YSF 22) and “The Biochemistry Global Summit” (Vimeiro and Lisbon, July 2022), where she showed the data of Aveiro and Rio Maior Salinas' isolates. @FEBSnews @iubmb @EngBiologicaUM

The last samples were collected in Spain, at Peña Hueca lagoon. This #hypersaline sulphated lagoon is a curious lagoons in the province of Toledo and an interesting #Astrobiology site. In a hot summer day and after a long journey, we had a lot of fun collecting samples.

Our 2nd sampling campaign was done at Rio Maior #Salinas , Portugal. In these inland salterns, brine is extracted from a deep well that has a large amount of rock salt. We greatly enjoyed this campaign, could see huge amounts of salt being collected and bought some to bring home

Our first sample collection was at Marina da Troncalhada in Aveiro, Portugal. Its salterns have ponds with varying levels of salinity and pH. It is a rich and diverse environment that will bring interesting microorganisms to B3iS. How fun it was to collect these samples.

Our team counts with researchers from @EngBiologicaUM at @UMinho_Oficial (#Portugal) and from @sklplanets at #MUST- #Macau (#China). CEB members are experts in #biosurfactants and #MUST members in microbes isolation from #extreme #environments, and together will meet B3iS goals.

The B3iS project aims to discover new biosurfactants from hypersaline environments. Culture-dependent and metagenomics approaches will be used to identify the biosurfactant producers. B3iS is funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT)
