This academic year, the SIG continued with our well-established coffee meets every month. We also started Reading Cafes and Teaching Materials Share sessions. Both have been successful, so the committee is busy planning new sessions in all three strands for 24-25! #planning

A lot of the work our SIG members do is pastoral - yes, we teach #PhD level academic writing and other research skills, but we're also there to support #PGR students. Doing a PhD can be very lonely.

Doing a PhD is tough, which is why we, along with the help of 50 other academics, wrote a book with over 100 pieces of advice to make your PhD more manageable.
It covers all different aspects like,
How to pick a good research topic
How to best interact with your supervisors
How to manage the imposter syndrome
How to make friends during your PhD
How to keep motivated
How to write a literature review
And much more!
You can find it here: amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0BXMY…

I wrote a piece for @timeshighered, talking about why every student (and researcher) should know about evidence synthesis, and how they can start learning (for free) this important research methodology.

Some insight on how #PhDstudents receive feedback from their supervisors. Good opportunity for us #EAP professionals to consider how we provide feedback to PGRs we work with. #feedback #supervision

This afternoon we had our first coffee meet-up of 2023! Today Milada Walkova (Leeds) spoke about Thick Critical Thinking in pedagogy, on a pre-sessional for #PGR students. This was followed by a lively discussion. Great start of the year for the SIG! #tleap #PhDstudents

The SIG will continue its monthly meetups (contact us if you'd like to join the SIG and the meetings) and we're looking forward to a SIG event at #BALEAP2023 at Warwick! #tleap 6/6

Om Saturday 12 Nov, the SIG held its first symposium (online) and it was a great event, bringing SIG members from various countries. We kicked off with an excellent plenary by @IanBruc19234684: Doctoral Education Theory and Practice: a personal account. #tleap 1/6

Last Friday we held our last coffee meet-up of this academic year. The focus was teaching speaking. We had a great discussion about varieties of PGR speaking and we could have talked much longer, another session is needed! #PhDstudents #PhDlife #tleap #speaking
