@BCUITEChat 4. #BCUITEChat A y9 student who returned from his manage move went from glaring at me for an hour with his book closed, to doing a page of work without me prompting him! I felt so proud. Safe to say I’ll hold onto that victory forever haha
@KDT5_8_17@BCUITEChat A5 - Learn the behaviour policy inside out!! Your students will know it, so you need to know it better than them, be firm but fair, I always tell my students every lesson is a fresh start! Don’t hold grudges as students start to believe you dislike them. #BCUITEChat
@KDT5_8_17@BCUITEChat A5. Observe as many people as you can and see how they do things. Read the pre-reading, and walk thru books to see different techniques.
@BCUITEChat A5 - I think my main fear was completely messing up a lesson in front of 30 teenagers, however, you learn from the mistakes and risk taking, reflect and move on, I always highlight my mistakes to pupils now and we have a laugh about it then move on - we’re all human #BCUITEChat

5. Behaviour was a worry before I started but observing other teachers, discussing behaviour in lectures, and planning how to use the behaviour policy really helped.
@BCUITEChat A5. I imagine behaviour will be a big topic here, so it would be good to hear from our ECTs how they approached this as a trainee #BCUITEChat
@BCUITEChat 4. There are too many! One highlight was returning from my 2nd placement and seeing the excitement of students when they saw me through the classroom window. It felt like I had never left and it was nice to know they’d missed me as much as I missed them! #BCUITEChat
@BCUITEChat#BCUITEChat Before the PGCE I didn’t have much classroom experience and I remember being nervous about that. I did mentoring as a 6th form student and shadowed teachers here and there, which I think massively helped with understanding the school environment beyond student eyes
Q5) New trainees - what are your main concerns or fears about starting your teacher training course? ECTs - what were yours and how did you overcome them? #BCUITEChat
@BCUITEChat I was a mature student/ career changer after 9 years in business management and a mum to 3 boys (14,7 and 5) I found this the skills i had from my previous job helped me to stay organised and being a mum to a teenager helped me to connect with my pupils.
@BCUITEChat@NCSTrust Without this experience I don’t think I would’ve believed that I could become a teacher so I’m so happy I was able to test the water first. Talking to current teachers and having their encouragement made me see my potential! #BCUITEChat
@BCUITEChat A3 - I spent a lot of years working for @NCSTrust during the Summer and Autumn, before becoming a DT technician in a school, this helped me with my subject knowledge before I started my training and helped me get a taste for teaching! 😌 #BCUITEChat

3. I had a year working after graduating so I had experience of professionalism in the work place and was used to the routine of working every day.
@BCUITEChat A3 Before I started my PGCE I spent 6 months work experience in the science department of a local school once a week. It’s not an entry requirement any more, but I don’t think my PGCE would have been as successful without that initial insight before it was my turn #BCUITEChat
@BCUITEChat Another one is BE OPEN MINDED! Be open minded to building relationships with people you may not usually and listen to the advice and constructive criticism given by expert teachers, mentors and tutors. It’s all to develop your practice
@miss_huie@BCUITEChat I had to force myself to do this, i think i went about 6 weeks where i was doing either uni or school work every day. It wasn't healthy! I then set aside 1 day a week for myself (wellI still had the demands of my boys!!)
