According to The Lancet Oncology commission report, there is “a growing imbalance between technological innovation and the human dimensions of cancer care....the human crisis of cancer is not defined by pathology, mortality, or cause, but by the erosion of meaning, connection, and compassion in the experience of cancer. This crisis is shaped by....the presence of fragmented, costly, and impersonal systems and the absence of human connection, psychological safety, and relational care.” This is why The National Centre for Integrative Oncology (NCIO) is offering a 10-week CPD postgraduate level course in Psycho-Oncology and Trauma Competent Care to address this gap in cancer care. Psychology’s Professor Nazanin Derakhshan, founder of The Centre for Building Resilience in Breast Cancer (BRiC) and METUPUK are hosting a poignant exhibition in the library foyer from Feb 14 to March 3, 2025. This exhibition, which has travelled across the country and even appeared at the Houses of Parliament, is now here to raise awareness about Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC). Watch this short video of the exhibition in Northallerton: youtu.be/5Rbi5n4Un7s 'The Darker Side of Pink' is an interactive mobile experience featuring 31 transparent figures, each representing a woman who dies every day from metastatic breast cancer in the UK. Each figure has a QR code that plays a video from patients living with this disease. MBC is often invisible, yet it is the biggest killer of women under 50 in the UK. METUPUK and BRiC are dedicated to improving outcomes for those living with MBC and addressing the backlog of care for patients. Join us in raising awareness and supporting the fight against metastatic breast cancer. ABCDiagnosis and METUPUK have been banging the drum for embedding the infographics into clinical pathways across the UK for some time. But did you know that there is now published research backing up the use of the infographics by women with breast cancer? Published by Frontiers in Psychology, the research by Professor Nazanin Derakhshan, Joanne Taylor and Bethany Chapman found that educating women about the symptoms of metastatic breast cancer upon completing active treatment for primary breast cancer can increase sense of control and psychological well-being. The participants in the study also felt empowered in the face of fears and anxieties regarding recurrence and progression of disease. A tremendous achievement for supporting the use of the infographics even further. The research paper can be read here in Frontiers in Psychology. Huge congratulations to the team for the research produced.
