A8 Share personal stories of your own “transformations.” Past jobs, pets, books, friends, etc. changed your views of the world and made you who you are. Sharing these stories encourages and deepens the student/teacher bond, significantly influencing your students’ lives. #G2Great

A8 Provide time for students to apply what we’ve taught in authentic situations. Provide time and encouragement for students to identify and share their own “transformations.” Make it a point to never miss an opportunity to highlight transformations vs. replications. #G2Great
English

A8) Doesn’t that kind of transformation define learning?#G2Great

@BCambourne I’ve been trying to practice this, Brian but it’s so ingrained in how we talk about learning in school that I have to make a conscious effort to change language that doesn’t support true learning. It is imp to do this, though. #g2great

A6 Declare a moratorium on describing school learning as “work” or redefine it as being about meaning-making. Replace “work” with words like “making meaning about”. #G2Great

A7 I remember when I knew I had to stop saying "I'm going to teach you..." A teacher friend shared with me that I was NOT the keeper of all the knowledge. AND I must remember that every day I'm in the position of learning along with Ss.

A7 The second statement reframes and reinforces the concept that learning=meaning-making and thinking. The first statement implies the teacher is going to transmit something from her head to the student’s head. #G2Great

A5 Model and share our own approximations (or ones we accidentally make on purpose) and explain the thinking behind them. Show children how you compose parent letters, emails to the principal, or other authentic pieces of writing, focusing on meaning and spelling. #G2Great
English

A5 We never let a chance go by to draw attention to “approximations” that support meaning-making. Both successful and unsuccessful attempts may support meaning (ex: when a science experiment didn’t “work”). Draw attention to the process used rather than the product. #G2Great
English

A4 Regard invented spellings as temporary, like baby talk. Instead of saying a spelling is “wrong,” honor student approximation/invite them to learn the conventional form. “Your approximation works well. Would you like me to show you the conventional form of that word?” #G2Great
English

@ThoughtfulRead I regret using the " acquisition" metaphor in the title. In our new book Deb and I explain why#G2great

A3 Intentionally arrange physical paraphernalia of classrooms (furniture, word walls, etc.) to promote sharing and discussion among peers. Also applies to distance learning—meet with small groups, use chat box & breakouts, etc #G2Great

@ElisaW5 @DebraCrouch10 Me too. It's an interesting project trying to applyt the C of L to virstual classrooms
English

@DebraCrouch10 I’ve been thinking about how to provide an online environment where Ss are engaged in their learning. #g2great
English

A2 The Condition of Engagement requires learners see themselves as “doers” or “owners” of what is being learned. Teacher’s role is to design effective learning settings which promote deep engagement, not compliance/regurgitation. #G2Great
English

A3 Ensure that you constantly make time and space for learners to engage in meaning making using a range of symbol systems such as oral and written language, art, music, craft, etc. #G2Great

@DrMaryHoward I'm honoured that you found my work useful Thank you#G2great

Did you see this Brian #G2Great

@DrMaryHoward So true, Mary. I am grateful to have had begun my early years as a teacher working in a district where I was introduced to Brian Cambourne’s Conditions of Learning and they guided our inquiry-based planning for the children we served.
English

A2 Rather than “learning how to talk/read/write”, reframe the process as “learning how to mean.” Teacher language encourages this: “Let’s think like scientists. Talk with your partners about how you understand the issue/question.” #G2Great
English

A1 All children believe they are capable of learning ANYTHING, until someone responds to them in ways that imply they can’t. They are literally MADE FOR LEARNING. #G2Great

@franmcveigh You'r right. It's all about making meang using symbols

A1. Rdg & Wtg are language based activities -children all come with language skills ready to be tapped into. #G2great

A1 Overwhelming evidence that humans ARE “pre-wired” to make and share abstract meanings using different symbol systems-oral, written, sign, artistic, etc. communication. Humans are the only species capable of such behavior #G2Great
