@BCommyCSC @CatholicSat Absolute rubbish. I've been every year since Pope Benedict's time, and every year I see another shop shut. The "new" restaurants often fail within the year and, while locals largely refrain from direct criticism of the Pope, they have felt his absence keenly

With Pope Leo XIV, the Pope returns to Castel Gandolfo, spending the month of July at the Papal Summer Residence, and celebrating the Feast of the Assumption at the Church of St Thomas of Villanova in August. This gives hardworking Vatican staff a welcome break in July and may help to boost the local economy of Castel Gandolfo that has been devastated when Pope Francis shunned the town more than a decade ago.

@pattif21 @CatholicSat That said I’m delighted Pope Leo is returning and look forward to seeing him there this year. Speaking to locals as I do they were disappointed when the Pope stopped coming but are now pleased they have a year round economy. That said they will now be delighted to have both!

@pattif21 @CatholicSat That’s not my lived experience having been around 9 times both pre and post Francis Gandolfo is bustling now compared to before with more restaurants than ever the sign of a strong local economy. Visitor numbers to the town are significantly up and it’s spread thru the year

@kikiC1931 @CatholicSat Turns out the mayor was wrong, the reversal is complete! I believe the numbers well in excess of 250k a year are way in excess of that predicted hence all the work that has been done to change the entry points, there is also now more restaurants in Gandolfo than ever!

@RPMComo The grass roots soccer in US has surprised a revolution in last 20 years, pitches everywhere with better surfaces than SPFL 3G most recent trip I was surprised as saw lots of people playing “soccer” in places that would have been basketball courts

@Hoidy @paulthetim Of course he did mate but he doesn’t owe us anything as a result of that we took him cos we were desperate and Peter pulled a rabbit out the hat. Both parties benefit and now he has a chance to prove himself at the top level (wether we like that or not)
