Taught in the 19th century for good reasons: we computed a/b with long division. For 1/sqrt(2) = sqrt(2)/2, find sqrt(2) in a table, and decide if long division is easier to get 1.414213562/2 versus 1/1.414213562. Taught today for bad reasons: because it was taught yesterday.

One problem with this country is that people who own 700 guns each and attend occasional klan meetings have been convinced by people who own 2 guns each and sit on boards of directors that people who don't own any guns and like libraries are eating babies.
