@BILLYGRAHAM72 OK, so if your total gross turnover was over £1,000, you must file the self assessment ASAP.
If all income received was below the personal allowance and there isn't going to be any tax owed, then a penalty shouldn't apply.
Tom
@HMRCcustomers It is below the tax liability threshold so I believe I wouldn’t pay any income tax for 22/23, HMRC are not expecting a return as my trading exemption ceased in 23/24, I just want to declare a few transactions from the previous year.
Please can you recommend an action? Thanks.
@BILLYGRAHAM72 Hello again,
I have mentioned previously a penalty may apply as it depends on a few things Billy.
1) if self assessment criteria exists.
2) if a tax liability exists.
3) if HMRC are expecting a self assessment and whether or not you have been granted an extension.
Tom
@HMRCcustomers Please respond to above. My trading exemption ceased this year but can I submit a tax return for last year?
Even though my UTR only came this week and I missed the deadline? Will I be fined? Thanks.
@BILLYGRAHAM72 This depends on a few things, such as whether self assessment criteria is met and if a potential liability exists, hence the question.
Tom
@HMRCcustomers I’m not talking about myself I’m just asking a question so can you answer? Why the use of “you”
If I was to upload a 22/23 assessment would I be fined for being late?
@BILLYGRAHAM72 Thanks.
So it appears HMRC are not expecting a 22/23 self assessment, which means you've probably provided a date for your registration after 06/04/2023.
Tom
@HMRCcustomers How do I know if I need to pay tax for the 22/23 year? Will I be alerted via post or email?
I know I will definitely need to pay tax for 23/24.
@BILLYGRAHAM72 Ok thanks. If we've not sent the UTR yet the deadline should be extended. You'll be notified of this once you've received the UTR. Sofia
