Thank you, yes top view gives the viewer a great angle but so does the side view as you can then see binding sequence. I also don’t know if it’s a technical problem and how freely the overhead camera moves across the pitch? But yes would be great to see more of this for the viewer.

@BJBotha @IrishRugby @ProperChurch Always find your scrum analysis interesting. Your thoughts on best camera angle for the viewer? As per this one,the overhead always seems to give best view of the dynamics in play at the scrum, & yet it’s only provided rarely. If it was the normal angle, would it educate the fans?

2nd clip is without a doubt a penalty to @IrishRugby and can’t fathom why this wasn’t rewarded. The Irish pack is clearly moving forward and dominant, with @ProperChurch having his opposite in all sorts of trouble. On top of this @ProperChurch fights hard to save his bind as the French T-head’s bind is illegal and pulling him downwards. At the end the @FranceRugby T-head collapses inwards due to pressure, a clear penalty to Ireland. @SixNationsRugby

@DO39sullivan Definitely for it, but only if it could be done seamlessly with no time delay.

Clip 1 is a penalty against Ireland on their own ball for collapsing. For me @IrishRugby get a great hit on the engage sequence, especially on Porter’s side and feel Antonio is under pressure and the French hooker can’t get his hips through which means they can’t recover. The ref doesn’t have the luxury of the top view but you can clearly see French T-head and hooker hinging down first due to them not getting across the line and the great engage from Ireland. The French pack were under pressure here and got lucky, for me is at the very least a reset and stern talking with the French front row to take the hit and fight to stay up. @SixNationsRugby @FranceRugby

@BJBotha @IrishRugby @ProperChurch What happened the Irish tighthead there? He started moving dead straight then seemed to get slung outwards in a very eye catching way that may have been what the ref was looking at

The ref’s call is final but these calls need to be better?? For me there isn’t one area that points towards Porter here other than maybe advancing on the hit, but this for me is caused by the French T-head. They 7 against 8 here and the Irish come with a solid hit, you don’t get across the line, what do you do….you choose not to scrum.

@ElspethMcGonagl @BJBotha @IrishRugby Whether the ref is right or wrong his decision is final. As per the clip it's a penalty against Porter and it was the same in the RWC QF. The scrum is reffed by pictures and reputation. Porter now has the reputation and that's hard to shift.

@FogartyJack @IrishRugby No, he’s basically telling the ref to blow the whistle and that he’s not scrummaging…while his head is buried in the turf.

@BJBotha @IrishRugby Is that Atonio's bind going as he goes down as well? Surely a tell tale sign that he's folding?

@david001889946 @IrishRugby I think in fairness like all L-Heads he has shown bad pictures so he’s now on the radar. But in this case he was rock solid!

Have a look at this and subsequent posts for some great scrum insight
Bj Botha@BJBotha

A big talking point was the set piece in regards to the @SixNationsRugby encounter between @IrishRugby and @FranceRugby and if the Irish had the pack to match them. Well the Irish more than answered that question in the lineout, which was superb! The scrum however was under pressure at times, but I think the Irish fought hard and deserved a lot more reward here than they received. I discuss two scrums in my post to follow, where I explain why I feel the Irish should’ve got a penalty, and one scrum they were unlucky to get one against.

@oisoftheclears @IrishRugby Yes he has improved but it’s always a work in progress. Perceptions come and go but the going takes a little longer unfortunately. The French pack is probably one of the toughest packs to come against so yes it was always going to be tough going.

@BJBotha @IrishRugby May I ask what, if any, the significance of the French T-head prop extending his arm after the hit? Thanks.

@aulurkerau @IrishRugby @ProperChurch It does bobble out and point taken about ref wanting ball in play. But this bobble caused by whip around caused by the first offence of French T-head collapsing.

@BJBotha @IrishRugby Do you think refs review scrums post match from that above angle (if available). I think it’s very useful learning.

@peterom6 is pin point perfect. Hookers generally have there shoulder taking first contact on opp T-head and so it would drop to keep pressure down. I would suggest looking what happens on contact point and who is under pressure….bearing in mind this is an Irish put in. *see below my thought on Peter’s shape.

@BJBotha @IrishRugby Sheehan came in skew on the left, helped by 6 O'Mahoney also not straight pushing in IMO. Threw the whole scrum off. Only thing that might have gone against France was at the bind they looked not straight, but then Sheehan's one shoulder drop off could have caused it.

@AndyWhite01 @IrishRugby @threeredkings All to his own, and not saying Porter hasn’t shown poor pictures at scrum time, who hasn’t? But would like to know what the problem might be if it needs to be fixed immediately?

@Lancegordon85 @IrishRugby No it’s experience, and @peterom6 understands the perfect pressure point and how to maximise it. It’s his job first and foremost to keep the L-head’s hips in, the go forward is mostly from his 2nd row.
