Teja Gavankar’s sculpture is inspired by the concept of Khora, a philosophical term described by ancient Greek philosopher Plato as a receptacle, a space, or an interval. It is neither existence nor non-existence, but an interval between, in which forms were originally present. For this artwork, artist Teja takes two equal hemispheres or halves that do not form a whole sphere, but rathe are arranged in a ‘transition mode’. This geometric exploration of form inspires Adbhuta Rasa, which then leads to wonder.
Drawing from her past works, Teja continues to use miniature bricks to emphasise ideas of the unit in relation to the composite whole. The brick is a metaphor for human intervention in building forms.
“Passengers have memories and emotions associated with a place they are coming from and look forward to the new experiences as they move to a new place. A journey is a transitory and fluid process. The sculpture is a futuristic form and indicative of how we are always becoming something.” – Teja Gavankar
