@Captain_Deltic @concaveasitwere @railnigel Sunday morning, GWR 165s from the North Downs are booked to shunt via Gatwick carriage sidings but they’re often able to stay on the platform due to lack of traffic. Granted, there’s not a crew change, but they still sit there for 30 mins or more, engine off, doors open.

How it should be done!

@railnigel here we are at Waterloo, a train with no crew, not even a destination, but sitting with the doors unlocked and open

My children (inexplicably, Chelsea fans) have decided we shall make a big fuss of the Cup Final tomorrow afternoon, bit of gathering, drinks/picky bits etc. They’re pretty young and I have not the heart to tell them that, as a Brighton fan, I’d prefer Manchester City to win. 😂

Also, it’s just a brand. The great railway company that made it famous is long gone. FirstGroup cleverly linked their TOC to it and have been piggybacking off Brunel’s railway successfully, but there’s no cause to be sentimental about the modern recreation.
BMLBod@BMLBod

@railnigel The British government scrapped the GWR brand once before and the world didn’t end. It’s a shame, but ‘utterly insane’ is hyperbole.

I try to avoid the ‘I don’t like this, therefore it is terrible’ approach to life. No good comes from conflating objective with subjective.

@BMLBod @railnigel Some media personalities use GWR to travel between London and their West Country homes. What will they think (when they see the change) ?

You will not find a clearer explanation of the DfTs utterly insane decision to scrap the GWR brand than Richard Bowker's brilliant Linked In piece here. Please read and circulate it. Hopefully saner counsels might yet prevail. linkedin.com/posts/stevenri…

@NickHutsonMusic Merlin theme parks seem to be full of threatening health and safety/security oriented notices, particularly in their queue lines. Nothing says ‘have fun’ more than being warned about queue jumping every ten yards.

What the govt is doing to itself politically right now is utterly insane. The railway will survive leaving the GWR brand behind again. I adore railway heritage and I’m very fond of the GWR, but I don’t think the operational railway needs to carry it all forward forever.

@concaveasitwere @railnigel Let’s hope they make a success of it and GBR as a brand builds a reputation for dependability, rather than even more failure.

@concaveasitwere @railnigel On that I agree, but I’m hopeful it will get better. I always assumed, given the government were making such a song and dance of nationalisation, that the TOC brands couldn’t survive anyway, because the rhetoric meant GBR must be seen as a clean break with the privatised era.

@BMLBod @railnigel It’s not “a shame” it’s crazy and deliberate decision made entirely on ideological grounds not giving any value to the great work GWR have done over years to generate such a recognisable brand.

@railnigel I have no objection to the TOC brands disappearing, historic or otherwise. In my experience, people want a railway that works and they’re not overly bothered by the brand on the side of the train.

@letitburnt @leftrestoration He’s always there, every time Labour has a wobble and now he’s complicit in this debacle, of the kind Labour assured us was gone with the Conservatives. None of them are to be trusted because of that, but Burnham is particularly high on the list.

Andy Burnham has put his career and reputation on the line to demonstrate an ability to beat Reform in a tight marginal. This is exactly the kind of courage Labour needs if it is to win the next election.
Politics UK@PolitlcsUK

🚨 NEW: Sir John Curtice says Labour would have "less than 5% chance" in the Makerfield by-election "if it were anyone other than Andy Burnham" He adds it's one of the tightest Labour-Reform contests and a "much tougher" election to win than Gorton and Denton [@politico]

@leftrestoration Labour also seem to assume that the damage done by removing Starmer will be easy to repair, like they haven’t clocked just how hostile the public mood is now and that none of the old political certainties that might once have made this recoverable, still apply. That’s arrogance.

@leftrestoration Keep telling yourself that. Burnham is consistently involved whenever there’s a sniff of weakness at the top of the Labour Party and quite obviously so. He isn’t to be trusted at all.

@DPJHodges If he loses then this rumbles on though doesn’t it? I’m so fucking done with English politicians. They all need to get in a room, regardless of affiliation and agree that if they actually cared about Britain and her people, they’ll stop bloody pretending this is Game of Thrones.

Seeing a lot of “Labour Civil-War” talk this morning. The reality is the war’s basically over. There’s now agreement on the timetable - September. There’s agreement on the candidate - Andy Burnham. The other potential candidates, Cabinet, PLP and Labour movement will all now gravitate towards Burnham. What’s left of Keir Starmer’s authority is already vanishing this morning. It’s done
