The musketeers shown below are New Model Army musketeers. The Royalists called them 'The New Noddle Amy' as they thought them to be all new troops, lacking in skills, and raw recruits. The reality is that there were some new recruits, but the majority of troops were veterans.

MAY 1643 – RAIDING CONTINUES ACROSS NORTHAMPTONSHIRE The Royalists were not having it all their way as Rockingham Castle also served as a base for raids into royalist territory in Leicestershire and Rutland. During the same month, a Royalist raiding party left Belvoir Castle.

7 MAY 1645 – THE NASEBY CAMPAIGN The New Model Army had reached Blandford in Dorset when they received instructions to besiege Oxford instead. On the same day, King Charles I, his Lifeguard, the Oxford infantry, and his train of artillery, marched out from Oxford.

30 APRIL 1645 – THE NEW MODEL ARMY MARCHES FORTH Sir Thomas Fairfax led the New Model Army from its headquarters at Windsor to Reading, intending to raise the siege of Taunton. By 7 May, Fairfax received instructions to abandon their march and to besiege Oxford instead.

In March 1643, during a raid on the north of the county which swept through Market Harborough and Oundle, Lord Grey had captured Rockingham Castle without a fight. He immediately set about strengthening its defences and adding cannons. Mike Ingram for the Nenequirer – 5.05.2018
