Matt Gage Gage is a heavy supinator, which when paired with a high arm slot creates a four-seamer that nearly crosses the zero line (81% spin eff.). With a great feel for spin, he throws his slider nearly half the time, although it’s not exactly effective enough to warrant such extreme usage (28% chase, 20% whiff). The gloveside bias allows his changeup to perform really well (34% chase, 36% whiff) despite just nine inches of horizontal movement, because everything in his arsenal cuts. It’s been his most effective pitch in spring training, and I think the usage needs to continue to rise. Gage threw 50 sinkers last year, with 12 inches of separation from his cutty four-seam fastball. He’s yet to throw it this spring, but I think it’s an essential part of the arsenal. There isn’t a ton of strikeout upside, but Gage has a good enough feel (67% strike rate) to throw his slider half the time, which protects him from a lot of damage. A more apparent changeup could be hugely beneficial.
