Dear Class of 2026, After probably the best four years of your life, the reality is going to come knocking on your door. For the first time in history, college grads have a higher unemployment rate than the general population. Currently the underemployment rate is at its highest, 43%. Your previous class, only 30% manage to land a job in their field. In conclusion, way more grads chasing way fewer jobs and needless to say nearly 9 in 10 grads are worried AI will replace entry-level roles… BUT, that’s not all because you, my friend, are graduating with $35,530 in debt. Yes, a university is a hell of a business. The US student loan debt alone is $1.84 trillion across 42.8 million borrowers… the second-largest consumer debt category after mortgages. The truth is you will most likely be paying that loan for 20 years. Your best bet is to work at Costco, and don’t tell them you have a degree. Costco’s average wage is now over $31/hour  After 6 years, employees get bonuses up to $5,500/year, plus 1.5x Sunday pay… pulling experienced clerks toward $80K/year with no degree, no debt. Meanwhile, 2026 grads could face the highest jobless rate in years, partly due to AI eliminating entry-level roles  So basically you are celebrating $35K in debt, for a piece of paper, a camera roll filled with drunk photos of nights you don’t remember, a bunch of textbooks that you never opened, a solid understanding of how to hold your liquor, how to ask chat gpt to fake your work experience, and you’re competing for a cashier job against someone already making $32/hr at Costco who never took a loan in their life. And AI just took the entry-level role you were supposed to start at. Don’t take it from me, take it from this guy who took 4 years to realize the system is stacked against you and he should have bought bitcoin instead.
