The brief draws provides ample evidence from the U.S., where democracy is actively deteriorating, to illustrate why the Court must adopt a “thick,” rights‑based conception of democracy that extends beyond free and fair elections. Read it here: bu.edu/law/files/2025…

This IHRC blog, “Migration and the Political Aspect of Enforced Disappearance,” highlights how enforced disappearances do not rob “one single right” but wholly remove someone “from the political fabric so thoroughly that they are expunged from a society’s collective memory.”

Cristosal provides an excellent and concise overview of the political history that has led El Salvador’s government to devolve into an authoritarian regime that employs strategic political persecutions and the chilling of fundamental human rights.

ProPublica’s database shows these large-scale accusations to be generally false, finding that the “Trump administration knew that at least 197 of the men had not been convicted of crimes in the U.S. — and that only six had been convicted of violent offenses.”

The secret bilateral agreement between the U.S. and El Salvador—which facilitated the transfer of more than 250 migrants to CECOT—used a centuries-old statute, the Alien Enemies Act, to summarily remove individuals alleged to be members of the criminal gang, Tren de Aragua.

A clear example lies in the individuals who were deported from the United States and held at CECOT. These men were deemed “terrorists” despite having no active or ongoing criminal proceedings in the United States and had not been notified of any judicial action against them.
United Nations Geneva@UNGeneva

“For decades, vague & overbroad definitions of #terrorism have led to countless human rights violations,” warns independent expert @profbensaul.“These include unlawful killings, arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, torture, unfair trials, privacy breaches, refoulement.”

The Venezuelan men who were subject to the Trump Administration’s third country deportations endured egregious physical and mental abuse at CECOT. The personal accounts in this article emphasize “how senseless their detentions were.”
ProPublica@propublica

“The country with the Statue of Liberty deprived us of our liberty without any kind of evidence,” Leonardo José Colmenares Solórzano, a 31-year-old Venezuelan who was held in CECOT for months, said two days after he was returned to his family. propublica.org/article/venezu…

ICE Flight Monitor
ICE Flight Monitor@ICEFlightM·
Since 2020, ICE Flight Monitor has tracked 50K+ ICE flights. In Trump’s 2nd term alone: 2,253 deportation flights (46% ↑ from Biden’s last year) & 9,966 “shuffle” flights (132% ↑). These flights operate under an opaque system that rips families apart and endangers our democracy

(1/4) ICE’s civil rights watchdog, designed to keep the agency in check, was illegally closed in March 2025. After we sued to keep it open, the government changed tactics. It dropped its staff from 150 to 9, cut its budget by 75%, and hasn't issued a single recommendation on 6,000 civil rights complaints since March 2025. levernews.com/the-watchdog-d…
