Y12 - a really helpful four-page briefing here, great for elections and democracy topics. Remember always to link your answers to a *type* of democracy and feature (rep, lib, etc.)

'Is First Past the Post Undemocratic?' I've written a policy brief responding to the common claim that the system we use to elect MPs in Britain is 'undemocratic'. TLDR: It depends what you want in your democracy. Proportionality or accountability? qmul.ac.uk/mei/policy-hub…

US government avoids a Christmas Shutdown by signing a new funding bill. Technically it was Shutdown for 38 minutes as that's when the Senate signed the bill in a show of bipartisanhip 85-11. It had passed the house earlier 336-34 news.sky.com/story/us-gover…

Y12 - Scottish Budget yesterday included scrapping two-child benefit cap. In July, the same thing was suggested as an amendment in Parliament and led to Labour suspended 7 MPs when they voted for it (and were told not to). A great comparison for your devolution topic! Read below.

Y12 - useful for a bunch of topics (Parliament - scrutiny, representation, legislation, role/power backbenchers, etc plus Parties, Democracy and Pressure Groups topic). But also a fabulous super-curricular opportunity for students. Get stuck in!

Y12 - Assisted Dying Bill passes second reading. Useful for Parliament (legislative process, private members' bills, role of Parl), PM (cabinet unity), Pressure Groups, Parties (ideology, unity), Democracy (Rights) & lots more. Huge case study for you! theguardian.com/society/2024/n…

Tomorrow the House of Commons will debate the Second Reading of the Assisted Dying Bill. But MPs will need to vote on more than just the Second Reading. How many times will MPs vote tomorrow? And what will they be voting on? 🧵 buff.ly/3CLe6l5
