'The Lord of the Rings: Gollum' released on this day in 2023. An action-adventure title centered around Tolkein's grimiest hobbit, by way of Daedalic Entertainment. Widely mocked for poor production value, persnickety platforming, and the pointless nature of its central plot.

All said and done, I don't believe that Daikatana [on PC] deserves its reputation as an "all-time worst" contender. While it certainly failed to live up to impossible hype, the pride and passion which drove its creation still shines through in its gameplay. Suck it down, etc.

While Daikatana is most definitely flawed, there is still an ambitious [and often entertaining] game buried beneath a few layers of frustration. Initial reactions from frustrated critics / consumers have perhaps painted its long-term perception as more "broken" than it truly is.

'Daikatana' released on this day in 2000. Having left id Software due to creative differences, John Romero staked his reputation (and the future of his new company) on a new first-person shooter IP. After four years of struggled development, the end result was deemed a failure.

'Air Control' released on this day in 2014. A Unity asset-mash with non-functional flight controls, a total piss-take for a running plot, and completely broken mouselook implementation; sold on Steam for $5.99 before getting delisted several months later.

'Revolution X' released on this day in 1994. Midway's follow-up to their 'T2: Judgment Day' arcade rail shooter, centered around rescuing Aerosmith from an oppressive future regime. Impossible odds keep players slotting quarters, as the relentless pace turns to exhaustion.

Where its predecessor's own production had been infamously described as a "death march," Revolution's development would subsequently pass hands between no less than three publishers and developers. Its credits even open with an acknowledgement of the struggle to finish the game.

'Homefront: The Revolution' released on this day in 2016. The sequel to an already unspectacular / offensive 2011 FPS: The Revolution continues a premise of armed revolt against an unlikely North Korean occupation. Myriad technical issues and mediocre stealth and shooting await.
