@AnMgsCollection @BadHumans According to an article from Dengeki Online, Konami announced on September 19, 2001 that the Japanese release date of MGS2 would be moved up to November 29, 2001. That means the decision was made about a week after the events of 9/11. dengekionline.com/data/news/2001…

these assets are used at the start of the Plant Chapter. It's funny how this map gets reused again for when Arsenal passes under the Verrazano Bridge.

Within the files of MGS2's source code, there's mention of: NewBrooklyn3D NewBrooklyn3D_Fog NewBrooklyn_R2 BrooklynLights BrooklynLights_Fog You don't really get to see much of Brooklyn in MGS2, but it is the New York borough on the left of Arsenal Gear as it squeaks under the Verrazano Bridge (the Verrazano connects Brooklyn to Staten Island).

or possibly, a gamecube port of MGS2. Cross-platform connectivity would have been a wild idea in the early 2000s. It still is today. But at the same time, it's in line with the outside-of-the-box thinking Hideo Kojima is known for. So--who's to say. Maybe @Ken1555 knows a little more.

@BadHumans If this was real, I suspect it was more set up for Twin Snakes. Completion of the game possibly could have unlocked a Raiden suit for Solid Snake.

Metal Gear Ghost Babel & MGS2 Rumor (6/2/00): "According to IGNpocket affiliate Magic Box, Konami has been heard in saying that its Metal Gear Solid sequel for PS2 will interface with the Game Boy Color version of Metal Gear Solid in some fashion to unlock hidden features in the console editions. How much you've unlocked on the Game Boy Color game will affect Metal Gear Solid 2 in some way." ign.com/articles/2000/… @Kojima_Hideo

And again, in an interview with Famitsu magazine: In a recent interview conducted by the Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu, Hideo Kojima revealed more information about the PlayStation2 sequel to his most recent game, Metal Gear Solid. Kojima commented that he hopes to implement a new gameplay element where players can sense environmental conditions such as temperature and air pressure. He also hopes to add a battalion of enemies like Psycho Mantis in the sequel. Kojima said that Metal Gear Solid 2 is tentatively slated for a Fall 2001 release. That release date is Kojima's own goal and hasn't been officially announced by Konami. link to the english summary of the excerpt: gamespot.com/articles/kojim…

Having the player feel temperature & humidity was mentioned by Hideo Kojima a few times. Once, on the official Konami website, citing what his goals were for the sequel of MGS1. Transcending consoles, transcending centuries, and transcending its prequel... When Hideo Kojima traveled to Europe in March 1999 for the European release of Metal Gear Solid , a game magazine journalist asked him the question "What are you working on next?" Hideo Kojima answered, "I will create what consumers desire for the console that consumers desire." And May 2000. The answer to the question -- "Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty for PlayStation2 -- has unveiled itself at E3 in Los Angeles. The development of MGS2 was started under the theme "Transcend consoles from PSone to PS2, transcend centuries from the 20th to the 21st, and transcending (surpassing) its prequel MGS1." In the process was shown the trailer at E3 that shocked visitors with its quality surpassing that of the prequel, as stated in the development theme. At E3 it was elected "Best of Show" along with two other awards in the E3 awards. The hype among the visitors spread throughout the world instantaneously via Internet, magazines, television, and the Tokyo Game Show held in the following fall. At E3 2001 a playable version of the demo was exhibited along with a new trailer. It was even better received than the previous year, as seen in the receiving of awards such as "The Game Critics Award Best of E3 2001: Best Console Game. This was proof that people's expectatons were getting greater and greater. However, right after this E3 Hideo Kojima disappeared from all publicity, leaving the following message -- "MGS2 SUBMERGES.". A space in which you can feel the humidity and temperature.. The transition from PSone to PS2 resulted in the astonishingly improved means of expression. However, Hideo Kojima's aim was not simply to increate (sic) the number of polygons of models and stages. His aim was to create a space in which the player can indulge himself/herself freely at real time -- "a space that you are able to touch" -- a space that you can feel the temperature, humidity, smells, and even the air. What are we to leave to future generations?. Not only can games of the Metal Gear series be enjoyable as pure action games, but also must they convey a professionally-woven storyline with a strong theme. The theme of the previous MGS was "the escape from the restraints (DNA)". Hideo Kojima speaks of the theme of MGS2 as follows: "How do things that are not part of our genetic information get passed on? Does this change in any way in a highly-digitized world? The conceptual theme of MGS2 is about "passing on the soul (memories) and way of life to future generations". Life connects the chain of its species to the future generations. What plays that role is not simply genes. Only with "2" can Metal Gear Solid "come to an end." konami.com/mg/archive/mgs…

@chrisprice there's fog in the New York backdrop in general. The start of the Plant chapter has heavier fog than near the ending, but there's still fog when Arsenal is on its collision course. Brooklynlights on the other hand are only present at the start of the Plant chapter.

@BadHumans I thought the fog ones were used in the opening of Act 2. That's where the thick fog is, after all.
