Sonny Rollins playing on the Williamsburg Bridge with tenor saxophonist, arranger, and educator Paul Jeffrey in 1968. By 1959, Sonny Rollins had grown increasingly dissatisfied with what he felt were his own musical shortcomings and withdrew from the public eye to embark on the first—and most storied—of his self-imposed sabbaticals. Residing on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, he sought refuge on the pedestrian walkway of the Williamsburg Bridge, where he could practice without disturbing a pregnant neighbor. From the summer of 1959 until the end of 1961, Rollins returned to the bridge almost daily, playing for as long as 15 or 16 hours at a stretch, through heat, wind, and snow, alongside the rumble of passing trains. Today, a fifteen-story apartment building named The Rollins stands on Grand Street, marking the site of his former home—a quiet monument to one of the most disciplined and transformative chapters in jazz history.

Amtrak has a train that is slower than driving (end to end) and runs 1 round trip daily, yet it saw nearly 100k more ridership than projected. The people yearn for an alternative to driving.

Shit like this is why I say that if you’re in the STEM academia, you ultimately work for the military industrial complex. Every single innovation that comes through publicly funded research will ultimately end up in the hands of genocidal governments.

One of the weapons used in Bolivia against protesters yesterday, the robot 'Erizo'. Originally a tool to fight forest fires, invented by a state company under the MAS government. Now used by the neoliberal regime as a water canon to fire at people protesting against hunger.

Our sources within the Bolivian police have confirmed that they've received orders to use live ammunition against the indigenous long march that is arriving today in the capital. Protesters are aware and heading down regardless, to defend the country and its natural resources.

🇧🇴 Mining groups and rural unions clashed with law enforcement Thursday in La Paz, Bolivia—with miners setting off dynamite sticks and protesters attempting to breach the presidential palace. Unions representing miners and campesino workers have declared an indefinite strike targeting the country’s center-right President Rodrigo Paz, elected in October. Bolivia’s collapse as a natural gas exporter has triggered soaring inflation, fuel lines, and shortages of oxygen and medication at the country’s hospitals. The administration has blamed former President Evo Morales for stoking the unrest, which Morales denies. “The outraged are driven by their social conscience and their fury against a government that, from day one, betrayed its constituents and the nation,” Morales posted on X.
