Election is a popularity contest. A popular person may not necessarily be a great leader for the country. Who the public perceives to be good can be shaped using various tools. It’s much easier today with digital tech and smartphones. I am sure there are many people out there in a nation of 140 crore who’d do a great job. But not win election. They may not even want to be in politics. So we have what we have. We’d never know who is a good leader even within parties because our parties are all “high command style”. No independent positions. Bloody sycophants.
