Ficino had translated his books and convinced the Florentines that Hermes foresaw Christ. Pico read those translations and wrote that man was given no fixed form. Bruno read Pico and built memory palaces. Eckhart preached the spark in a Dominican church and the Dominicans tried him for heresy. They all walked on the same floor. The floor did not care who was standing on it.

In 1486 a twenty-three-year-old Italian wrote that God gave man no fixed form. Every other creature was locked into its nature at birth. The lion was always the lion. The angel was always the angel. But man was given nothing and told to choose. He could descend to the brutes or ascend to the divine and the choice was his in every moment forever. The Church tried to suppress the speech. The twenty-three-year-old fled to France and was arrested and released and spent the rest of his short life reading everything he could find in every language he could learn. He died at thirty-one. He had read more than most civilizations produce. His name does not matter. The speech does. You are the creature with no fixed form. You are choosing what you are right now, whether you know it or not.
