Now obviously thats not the politics I believe in. But the tweet was written from the political terrain of personal responsibility. Demanding all the benefit of scarce, speculative housing and none of the terrifying costs is having your cake and eating it too.

Lot of responses to this throwaway tweet written for the 5 people who give me courtesy likes on here. An interesting cross-section of boomers calling me gay, younger right-wingers calling me a communist, and even a lefty or two calling me heartless. A real Rorschach test.
braden@BanderReturn

The problem with housing is that boomers want to have it both ways—that is, as a financial asset, but also as a sacred “home” they’re entitled to keep. If you want the former, you need to pay your taxes. And if you want the latter, then it can’t be a financial asset.

@skull_moss And yeah, I know this avoids a lot of nuance. But you and I have been told to eat shit our entire lives. I have no love lost for these people. Maybe that makes me a bad person

i’m too stupid to argue about housing issues bc i’m a millennial who will probably never have her own house but i am smart enough to know how this guy is assuming the average old person is an aging billionaire who hoards everything and gives back nothing

I’m a Millennial. I’m also shocked at the replies I got when I suggested that the elderly shouldn’t have to sell their homes if they can’t pay inflated property taxes. It’s clear to me that people carry a deep hatred of their parents’ and grandparents’ generations.

@BanderReturn I think I asked a simple question about you owning a home. One does't need tax returns from 10 yrs ago to talk about how much property tax he pays. You talking about snrs. Do you own a home and how much tax to do pay on it? I don't need a name or a form. Conversation

@BanderReturn Stocks are a financial asset. We don't pay taxes on them while holding them, only at sale. You can treat boomer houses like other assets or you can treat them as a convenient way to rob them of their money in favor of vague government programs.

@skull_moss By pointing out this contradiction I’m implying that we should think of homes as homes, something important to the social fabric, and the state should intervene in a way that prioritizes putting people in homes rather than protecting asset values

@skull_moss My issue is that older homeowners (generally) want all the benefits of rising asset prices while simultaneously insisting on special treatment and tax carve-outs. So wealth accrues so the asset holder, and everyone else (younger people) foot the bill.

@BanderReturn And braden, do you own a home? How much do you pay in taxes per year? I don't think you know a lot about which you speak.

@skull_moss I usually only have like 0-5 people engage with my tweets so it wasn’t worded very carefully. I’m trying to explore the contradictions that arise when we insist that a home should both serve as basic shelter and as a speculative asset.

saying “a sacred ‘home’ they’re entitled to keep” like he’s The Bank from some dust-bowl era film or television show chomping at the bit to foreclose a family farm because taxes keep going up as personal finances go down down down

@DerekJMiller2 To a certain degree I agree with you. But from a young person’s perspective, we already pay payroll taxes to older people, and now they, who have a massive chunk of home equity, want to shift that tax burden onto young people as well. Makes accumulation more difficult, no?

@BanderReturn If young people spent half the time worrying about their own financial success and accumulation of assets as they did envying older people you would all be far better off.

@BanderReturn It was a GenXer politician that recently promoted 'seniors not having to pay property taxes'. Her tweet went viral, yet it seems all non boomers on X are blaming boomers for her tweet.

@DerekJMiller2 That’s like saying money isn’t a financial asset unless I spend it or loan it out. Just because houses are less liquid than money doesn’t mean it’s not a financial asset.

@BanderReturn It isn’t a financial asset until you sell it or you borrow against it. And no boomers are borrowing against her houses right now if it’s paid off unless they have a financial emergency, the interest rates are way too high. If you can’t afford a house, don’t buy one.
