Give it up for one of our newest K9 teams, Deputy Sheriff Ramos and his partner, Apollo, on a great catch! Last night #WhileYouWereSleeping the team responded to a traffic stop on Spirit Lake Rd in Winter Haven after the initial deputies smelled the odor of marijuana from the vehicle they stopped due to the driver having a suspended license.
The deputies requested the K9 team, and as they were interviewing both vehicle's occupants, the passenger (Jayden Daniels) began pushing one of the deputies and tried to run. Apollo said in dog speak, "I would not run if I were you, kind sir." and Daniels wisely decided to comply with that request.
Daniels had inside his tote bag multiple baggies of marijuana and a black Glock 23 handgun plus two loaded magazines. Daniels is a convicted felon. Daniels was charged with resisting arrest with violence, battery on a LEO, possession of a firearm & ammo by a convicted felon, and possession of marijuana & paraphernalia.
By the way it's also #NationalHugYourDogDay so please sent Apollo some virtual hugs for that too!

The third case of rabies in Polk County this year has been confirmed, this time within the city limits of Bartow.
As with the previous two cases, the rabid animal was a Brazilian free tailed bat.
On Wednesday, April 8, 2026, a family's cat was found near a live bat inside their home. It was not believed that the cat made any contact with the bat, but it is now under quarantine.
The bat was captured and sent to the State Laboratory in Tampa for testing.
Animal Control was notified of the result of the test, which confirmed the bat was positive for rabies.
“Do not hesitate to contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office Animal Control if you come into contact with sick, injured, or deceased wildlife. This is also a reminder how important it is to make sure your pets are vaccinated, even if it lives indoors.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff
Please do not approach any animal that is acting in an unusual or suspicious manner. If you think you or your pet has had an "exposure," please contact the PCSO Animal Control Section at 863-577-1762.

On Saturday, April 11, 2026 at around 5 pm, a PCSO deputy performed a traffic stop on a black Dodge Charger at State Road 33 and I-4 near Lakeland.
The Dodge had been reported stolen out of Tampa.
The driver was identified as 29-year old Exavier Ellis Walker of Tampa.
Through the investigation, it was learned that the Dodge had been rented by another man who had let Walker drive it. Later, Walker claimed to that man that the vehicle had been crashed, and he no longer possessed it, which of course was a lie.
Exavier was #ArrestedByThePolkCountySheriffsOffice and was found to be in possession of marijuana.
Exavier was taken to the Sheriff's Processing Center and charged with: Failure to Return a Leased Vehicle (F3), Possession of Marijuana (M1), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (M1).
According to the deputy, Exavier Walker has a criminal history that includes: Robbery, Burglaries, Possession of Burglary Tools, Criminal Mischief, Thefts, Fraud, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Assault on LEO, Fleeing to Elude LEO, Trespassing, and Battery. He has been sentenced to Florida State Prison one time and was released in 2018.

24-year old Luis Benavidez Rocha from Mexico was #ArrestedByThePolkCountySheriffsOffice on Saturday, April 11th, at around 6 am.
Luis' trouble began when a PCSO deputy performed a traffic stop on his black Honda on US 27, north of Davenport for very dark tinted windows.
The Honda also had a Missouri license plate that was not registered to that vehicle.
Immediately after the Honda stopped, Luis exited the car and began walking away. The deputy gave multiple orders for Luis to stop.
Luis then began running, and he tried to hide behind a concrete wall. He continued to refuse to surrender... until the deputy's Taser persuaded him to do so.
Luis was taken into custody and identified.
The Honda was examined and found to have multiple Vehicle Identification Numbers and had not been registered since 2020.
Luis crossed into the United States from Mexico six years ago and has never held a valid license or vehicle insurance in any state.
When asked why he ran, Luis stated, “Because I’m Illegal and I’ve seen all that ICE stuff on the news… I know I’m in Polk County.”
Luis was transported to the Sheriff’s Processing Center without further incident.
Luis Benavidez Rocha was charged with: Possession of Altered Vehicle Identification Number, Possession of Counterfeit License Plate, Resisting without Violence, No Valid Driver License: Never Issued, No Valid Vehicle Insurance, and Attach Unassigned Registration. Due to his illegal status in the United States, all charges are enhanced by one degree.
ICE was contacted and a hold has been placed on Luis.

On the evening of April 3, 2026, a white Toyota sedan was pulled-over by a PCSO deputy on I-4 near Mile Marker 33 in the Lakeland area.
The reason for the stop was excessive speed-- the Toyota had been traveling 106 mph in a 70 mph zone.
The driver was identified as 30-year old Michael Lee Velez-Martell of Lakeland.
In addition to the speed, the deputy witnessed a near collision between Velez-Martell's Toyota and another vehicle when Velez-Martell briefly lost control and swerved.
Michael Lee Velez-Martell was #ArrestedByThePolkCountySheriffsOffice and taken to the Sheriff's Processing Center without incident and charged with: Dangerous Excessive Speeding (M2) and Reckless Driving (M2).
The deputy noted that Velez-Martell requested the Sheriff Grady Judd refrain from showing his mug shot during a Morning Briefing video on the PCSO's social media pages.
We didn't make any promises.

One of the drivers suffered minor injuries and had to be transported to the hospital where he was treated and released.

PCSO deputies were able to locate the Kia Soul, parked and unoccupied behind the Wing Stop restaurant nearby.
A deputy made contact with the suspect by phone and convinced her to surrender without incident.
30-year old Tianna Marie Velazquez of Davenport confessed that she was the driver and was #ArrestedByThePolkCountySheriffsOffice.

On Tuesday, April 14th, at around 2 am, Deputy Fontanez conducted a traffic stop on a bicyclist in Wahneta on Rifle Range Road.
As the deputy was getting out of the patrol car, the bicyclist began to dismount and started looking around.
Deputy Fontanez recognized the man's body language as an indicator that he was preparing to flee, so Fontanez warned him not to run.
The man stayed put.
During the stop, Deputy Fontanez identified the bicyclist as 32-year old Logan Grooms, and discovered that Grooms had an active Polk County warrant for Violation of Probation (Burglary and Felony Petit Theft).
Grooms was #ArrestedByThePolkCountySheriffsOffice and taken to the Sheriff's Processing Center to be booked-in on the warrant.
It was there that Grooms told Fontanez that he decided not to run from the traffic stop because the deputy, "looked like a fast runner."
By not running, Logan Grooms saved himself an additional charge of resisting.
