Emeka was a good man. A religious man. He earned ₦100,000 working as a logistics officer. His wife, Tolu, was a Senior Dev at a Fintech company earning ₦1.2 million monthly.
The gap was wide, but Emeka wanted to be the Man of the House.
One Sunday, he heard a message from the pulpit: "If you earn ₦100k and she earns ₦1m, give her ₦50k. She will value your sacrifice more than her millions."
The congregation shouted "Amen!" Emeka shouted the loudest. He felt like God had given him the cheat code to secure his wife's submission.
So, the ritual began.
Every month, immediately the alert entered, Emeka sent ₦50,000 to Tolu with the narration: "For your hair and maintenance. Love you."
Tolu would smile, say "Aww, thanks baby," and use the money to buy one Uber Eats lunch for herself and her colleagues.
Meanwhile, Emeka was dying.
With only ₦50k left for himself, he turned into a magician.
He stopped taking bikes; he started trekking to save ₦200.
He stopped eating meat; he became a vegetarian by force.
He wore the same shoe for 2 years until the sole started talking.
He told himself, "I am building a home. She sees my sacrifice. She respects me."
For three years, Emeka gave her ₦1.8 million in total.
For three years, Tolu stacked her own ₦1.2 million monthly. She bought lands and treasury bills.
Emeka had nothing. No savings. No investments. Just the pride that he was "taking care" of his wife.
Then came the "Japa" conversation.
Tolu got a job offer in the UK. The relocation cost was heavy.
Emeka sat her down, chest pumped up. "Babe, how do we plan this? We need to pool funds."
Tolu looked at him with confusion. "We? Emeka, with all due respect, what funds do you have?"
Emeka stuttered. "I... I have been taking care of you. I have been sending you allowance..."
Tolu laughed. A dry, wicked laugh.
"Emeka, that ₦50k? That was data money. Do you want me to use data money to pay for Visa and NHS surcharge? Please, I have already paid for myself. You should try and sort yourself out."
Two months later, Tolu was at Heathrow. Emeka was at Murtala Muhammed Airport, waving goodbye to a wife who had outgrown him.
He went back to his empty self-contain. He checked his account balance: ₦4,200.
He sat on the floor and calculated.
If he had saved that ₦50k for 3 years, he would have nearly ₦2 million. He could have started a business. He could have invested.
Instead, he invested in "Gender Roles" that gave him zero ROI.
His wife didn't value the ₦50k more than her millions. She valued survival. And because she had millions, she survived. Because he gave his all, he was left behind.
