In shock, but very very grateful that I've been awarded @sgsah funding for my PhD project "A conspiracy of silence: abortion, birth control and eugenics in early twentieth-century Scotland" and will be joining @HCAatEdinburgh in October. I'm equal parts excited and terrified! 😅

Had such a wonderful birthday yesterday. 😍 I always knew I wanted this cake, but being in the third year of my PhD, it really hits different. 😂🤓

Scottish Government internship done! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I carried out analytical work to help guide the priorities of the next Women's Health Plan - rewarding and right up my alley. Balancing it with teaching at two unis was intense, though, so I celebrated with some much-needed stress relief.🎯

When you're doing a full-time internship and teaching at two institutions at the same time.. God, as much as I enjoyed my classes and had some wonderful students, finishing teaching has never felt so good!😂 Trying not to think about the amount of marking coming my way just yet..

It's also very bizarre to be working at St Andrew's House, a place that's so central to my PhD as a site of contention for the Scottish birth control movement!

Today I started my internship with the Scottish Government, where I'll be working on the Women's Health Plan! Very excited to keep exploring women's healthcare and reproductive issues, but now in a contemporary policy context. 😁 Grateful to @SocSciScotland for this opportunity!

The spookiest thing this spooky season is the amount of marking I have to do. 💀

Well, I can't say I saw that coming.

Had 10 very productive days in London for the PhD, mostly spent in archives, but I also managed to see some landmarks on my runs and even scored last-minute tickets to a West End show! Big thanks to @sgsah for funding this trip! Now, time to write... 😬

In London to visit some archives for my PhD! 👀 First full day here, so I had to go for a morning run along the Thames (here I am trying to point to the Big Ben - 10/10 for effort 😂).

My entire family thought this was a pregnancy announcement (??) so it's been quite the morning. 😅

When the doctors are concerned about your low resting heart rate (45bpm) but it turns out you're just a runner. 😂 Pretty cool to see! 🫀

A much-needed wee break from the PhD and hospital appointments. Drove around Rhodes and petted all the cats. 😌

Had a wonderful time at the @sgsah Year 2 Symposium last Friday - so nice to hear what everyone in my cohort has been up to over the past year! Also passed my year 2 APR. 🥳 Came home to flowers and lots of chocolates (and spent the weekend doing nothing but eating the chocs). 😂

My sister just introduced me to someone as 'a detective of the past' and they responded 'oh, like a paranormal investigator?' God, 'historian' suddenly feels so boring.

Had a great few days at the @UofGCSCS Symposium last week, heard some really fantastic papers! I also got to share a little bit of my own research. 👀

There's something special about lunchtime at the NRS, when a bunch of academics stand around the lockers eating their sandwiches while desperately trying to avoid making eye contact with each other. 💕
