The 800 year old Bargate was bricked up during the Blitz and used as an air raid shelter. The worst nights of Southampton’s Blitz came in 1940, on 23 November, 30 November, and 1 December. Bombs destroyed much of the area around it, but rather miraculously the Bargate survived.

1611 map. It is thought ‘Bitterne’ derives from the Old English ‘byht’ meaning a bend in the river and ‘aern’ meaning a house. It’s written as ‘Byterne’ in 1090s. Bishops used a manor here, Edward I gave it to them in 1284. Manor was on the site of the Roman town of Clausentum.
