From mid-December, Instagram and Facebook’s messaging services will no longer be cross-compatible, according to a pair of Meta support pages quietly updated. Once the feature is discontinued, you won’t be able to start new cross-platform chats, and existing conversations between services will go into read-only mode. It’s unclear exactly when the pages were updated, but the Instagram version carried the notice as of at least November 21st.

The world's largest social network has more than 2 billion daily users, and is expanding rapidly around the world. Led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook undergirds much of the world's communication online, both through its flagship app and its subsidiaries Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus. Despite huge financial success, Facebook is also confronted with questions about data privacy, hate speech on the platform, and concerns that frequent social media use can lead to unhappiness. The Verge publishes a nightly newsletter about Facebook and democracy, subscribe here.

With wearables, physical buttons are beloved for a reason. They signal that you’ve got a wearable that works even when your fingers are sweaty or in gloves. Most of the time, they also double as shortcuts for frequently used apps. It’s freedom from the touchscreen, if that’s what you want (though most people like having both). Plus, some people just like pressing buttons.

This is the keyboard that will convert you to the low-profile life LLow-profile mechanical keyboards have always seemed a bit odd to me. I get the appeal — in theory, they offer a slim, visually lighter design similar to a typical membrane chiclet keyboard while maintaining the improved tactility and better typing experience of a traditional mechanical keyboard. But in my experience, they usually end up as the worst of both worlds. They’re still bigger than a membrane keyboard but don’t feel markedly better to type on. Plus, they are much harder to customize than standard mechanical boards due to a much smaller pool of compatible switches, keycaps, and other parts. My position has been that if you aren’t going all the way to a full-height mechanical keyboard, don’t bother. This $159 Lofree Flow keyboard I’ve been typing on for the past few days might just change my mind. Its chassis is just 10mm thick, but it maintains a very nice typing experience. It looks cool, with classy keycaps and sharp legends, and works wirelessly with both Windows and Mac computers. It also has an aluminum frame and build quality that rivals fancier mechanical keyboards, and it sounds and feels great right out of the box — no rattly stabilizers or pingy reverberations here. Lofree sells two versions of the Flow: a white and silver one with linear switches and a black and dark gray model that comes with tactile switches and apes Apple’s space gray motif. (Oddly and annoyingly, you can’t choose the color scheme and type of switch separately.) It’s clear that Lofree is targeting Mac users directly with the style and functionality of the Flow, but it has a Windows mode and dual legends on the modifier keys to support both platforms. I’ve got the dark gray model with black keycaps here, and I really like the way it looks on my desk — it’s sleek and takes up a minimal amount of space. The Flow has a 75 percent layout, which means it has arrow keys, a function row, and a handful of cursor control keys. Unless you have a specific need for a numpad, this layout gives you all the keys you need in a compact format and is very similar to what’s on a lot of laptops.  Both colors of the Flow let you swap out the keycaps and switches, but if you were hoping to go wild with customization, there are limits. The Flow’s switches have a different pin layout from other low-profile switches, so you are effectively limited to Lofree’s stock Kailh switches in either linear, tactile, or clicky variants. The Flow also doesn’t support popular remapping tools like VIA that let you customize the functionality of the keys exactly how you like them. For me, none of those limitations have been a problem because I really like both the way the Flow looks with its included keycaps and how it feels and sounds with the Phantom tactile switches my unit came with. I am also able to remap keys using Karabiner Elements on my Mac, so I don’t really miss VIA. The keycaps are a textured PBT material that resists shine and feels nice under my fingers. Their profile is a bit flatter than I’m used to, but I think that makes it easier for those coming from a laptop or chiclet keyboard. (I was able to get full-size MX-style keycaps to work on the Flow, but the typing travel was comically low, and doing so kind of defeats the purpose of a low-profile keyboard.) The switches are smooth, self-lubricating, and have a travel of 2.8mm. That’s a lot longer than the 1mm or so you get on a MacBook, but it’s considerably shorter than the 4mm or more a full-height mechanical switch might have. As a result, I bottom out a lot more when typing on the Flow than I do on my other mechanical boards. But it’s still more satisfying than typing on a Magic Keyboard, and the Flow has a dampened feel that reduces harshness thanks to the foam and gaskets inside of it.

@LLinhDan135543 I get why. Fitbit’s physical buttons have never been as reliable as Garmin’s. They often got stuck as the years went by. Why invite the hardware headache if the haptic button works just as well? But that’s a big gamble in this space.

When the Charge 6 was first announced, I thought it would have a physical side button. So did a lot of other folks. So I felt bamboozled and betrayed when I unboxed the tracker. Yes, it looks like a button, with its oblong shape and tactile bump, but when you press, nothing moves. There is no click. If you do it right, you’ll feel a buzz. Because this is a haptic button — not a mechanical one.

@anh_vuong66929 I regret to say that while the button is back, it’s not quite what I was hoping for. But once my ire cooled, it became more apparent just how much more of Google is in this device — to the point where I’ve started calling this the Pixel Band in my head.

The Charge 6 seemed like a return to form. It’s $20 cheaper than the Charge 5, with a better heart rate tracking algorithm, more Google services, and — for the first time — gym equipment integration. The Fitbit app was redesigned this fall. These are all good and fine, but the change I cared about most was the return of the side button. Fitbit did away with the side button on the Charge 3 in favor of an inductive groove, and let’s just say it wasn’t a popular choice.

That’s a question I’ve asked myself a lot over the past year as Google has further integrated the company into the fold. In the past 11 months, Fitbit has had several major server outages, angered longtime users by sunsetting Challenges and social features, and then quietly stopped selling its products in over a dozen countries. Those are the highlights in what’s been a bumpy integration, so I was heartened when Google announced the $159.95 Fitbit Charge 6 earlier this fall.

Phim: Love and Other Drugs (2010)

Hideo Kojima teases mystery Xbox game OD / It has a great cast, but that’s about all we know It wouldn’t be a Game Awards without Hideo Kojima. This time, however, the director wasn’t on hand to show off Death Stranding 2 — instead he revealed a new Xbox game called OD. We didn’t get to see much of the game, which was teased last year, and the first teaser mostly just showed the cast doing motion capture tests. It ended with the tagline “For all the players and screamers.” That said, the game does have a strong cast, including Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier. Also Jordan Peele is involved somehow. Kojima teased other big names who are working on the project, but wouldn’t say who just yet. OD is billed as something of a cross between a game and a movie, with a press release describing it as an experience that “explores the concept of testing your fear threshold, and what it means to OD on fear — while blurring the boundaries of gaming and film.” In a statement, Kojima said “We are working with Xbox Game Studios and their cloud gaming technology to take on the challenge of creating a very unique, immersive, and totally new style of game — or rather, a new form of media.”
