JOSH JOHNSON TO SERVE AS WATERLOO SCHOOLS DIRECTOR OF SECONDARY EDUCATION . The Waterloo Community School District (WCSD) is pleased to announce Josh Johnson as the incoming Director of Secondary Education, effective July 1, 2024, pending approval by the Waterloo Schools Board of Directors. . “Josh is the ideal candidate to fill this position,” said Dr. Jared Smith, WCSD Superintendent. “We believe he has the perfect combination of experiences and skill sets to lead our secondary schools in the years to come.” . Johnson, who will succeed Amy Schmidt in the position, expressed his excitement about the opportunity. “As a former high school principal and AEA administrator serving the Cedar Valley for the past 12 years, it has become evident that Waterloo has a thriving district and community,” stated Johnson. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to grow leaders within the schools while working with administrators to contribute to the progressive vision of the district.” . Johnson’s career in education began in 2006 at the Starmont Community School District in Arlington, IA, where he taught grades 6-12 and served as the K-12 Activities Director. He transitioned into administration in 2011, serving as Assistant Principal and Activities Director at Union High School before assuming the role of Principal at Wapsie Valley Junior High and High School in Fairbank, IA, and later at Charles City High School in Charles City, IA. In 2018, Johnson further expanded his career by serving as the Region 8 Administrator at Central Rivers Area Education Agency in Cedar Falls, IA. . Johnson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education and a Coaching Endorsement from Wartburg College in Waverly, IA. Additionally, he earned a Master of Arts in Education, along with PK-12 Principal Endorsement and PK-12 Special Education Supervisor credentials from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA, where he is currently enrolled in the superintendent program. In his free time, Johnson enjoys coaching youth sports, volunteering in the community, and spending time with his wife, Lydia, and four boys.
