Donald Ross had one of the most prolific, impressive careers in the history of golf architecture.
This week on Designing Golf, @garrett_TFE discusses what he believes are the five essential Donald Ross golf courses (a thread 🧵)
I don’t understand the decision to shape nearly every bunker at TPC Toronto’s North Course the exact same way. It’s a beautiful setting. By why do this?
@JohnPBlain1 They have been removing trees from around the green for a few years now. More trees being removed throughout the course based on our restoration plan.
@BarryJordanGolf I hardly recognized the 18th hole, it looks great. When did they take out all the trees around the green?
Very underrated Ross course. Lots of great Ross in Rochester
For golfers, Rochester is "ROSS"-chester! Excited to debut the most recent Donald Ross restoration in Rochester, NY. - Brook-Lea Country Club (1926) More to come on this historic transformation as the club prepares for their centennial celebration in 2026.

One of the great things about having projects in the Adirondacks is I get a chance to do this when I can. I wonder if Seymour Dunn ever made this hike to Indian Head. He very well might have.
@BradleySKlein@DesignOnPar@JJKeegan Ah yes, the new 8th hole. Terrible decision made in the early 90’s. Hey, let’s wipe out a Ross par 3 and Ross par 5, and build a new par 5 and new par 3 on the same piece of the course! Brilliant idea! And in so doing, wipe out the following Ross par 5! Don’t get me started!!
Proud to be part of an operations/design assessment team evaluating Donald Ross-designed Shennecossett GC in Groton, CT. Team led by @JJKeegan won a national bid to assess the legendary municipal course for all-around improvement. 3rd hole (l) 1934 aerial (r)
@MRichLaw@BradleySKlein@JJKeegan Yes it is. Grew up around the block and worked on the maintenance crew for a few years. Know it like the back of my hand. Was a much better course before being butchered in the early 90’s!!
@GCIMagazineGuy Donald Ross used them quite frequently. I always restore them when possible. 1) There is often a visual element 2) when the conditions are firm, (and wind in your face) they may be more in play than you think 3) a “lesser player” may be thrilled to carry or not get in one.
Can somebody explain what practical purpose fairway bunkers on a par 3 serve? They only catch shots struck by below-average players, thus slowing pace of play. They are also one more non-essential element that must be maintained by already stretched turf teams. 🤷♂️
Great week to be working on a Donald Ross restoration w the open at Pinehurst! Rochester, NY at Brook-Lea Country Club. The transformation continues with phase two underway. Photos from work yesterday on hole 18. W @masgolfconst#DonaldRossRestoraton
