@jennalaib So much here!! I’m willing to bet your graph of screen time in your house for your kids is imperceptible! I think about what kids are doing w their free thinking time- and worry about screens during summer break. I notice the in depth thinking and it makes me so happy!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

So my favorite thing about this is not just that she’s mimicking me — but that she’s learning how to quantify and represent things in her world. Now she’s working on a bar graph about how fashionable she felt in different months. Math helps us communicate! 🧵10/10

My 8yo daughter just drew a squiggly line on a piece of paper. “Mama, what do you notice? Do you see why high points? Or low points?” I talked about the shape of the graph, and pointed out a big drop. She circled it. #tmwyk #slowrevealgraph 🧵1/10

@MathforLove @jennalaib @Base10Math It's just occurred to me, some companies' rods aren't - bizarrely - exactly in uinits of 1cm. Worth checking the length of your Cuisenaire.

#cuisenairerods @MathforLove Hey y'all - I'm on a search to find blank grid paper for cuisenaire rods that is to scale. I've tried several times to shrink or enlarge the "almost" there grid papers but it's frustrating #1stgraders need scale to understand- want to represent! THX

@jennalaib @Base10Math Cuisenaire rods are based on cm scale, so cm paper should work. But if your printer automatically resizes with margins it’ll be a little too small. Check your printer settings 🙂

@alicekeeler As an elementary teacher, we have lunch duty every day. We have to sit at our students table to make sure they behave and eat. No more teacher tables while eating and having adult conversations

We are professionals. A reasonable lunch period is not being greedy. A duty free 30 minutes is the bare MINIMUM and really should be more. 45 minutes of planning time is completely insufficient to do all the tasks this job requires. I literally spend more than 45 minutes just reading emails. If want people to stay in this profession consider how much time it actually takes to do the job without being completely stressed out.

@ddmeyer I feel like these program have replaced the old school “shut up sheets” for independent learning. They are not ALL bad, but I’m watching us all depend on them and this is bothersome.

@ddmeyer So glad to read this article- honestly think that the personalized programs that are mandates in my district hurt the culture of my class. I spend too much time looking at data from their pets learning program to “learn” how they’re doing.
